My first official "Classic" coin

Bought this off a local bid board in Chicago. I said I'd only buy these types graded but had to take a chance as I thought this one was gorgeous. The colors are great - green, gold, red, orange and purples on the obverse. The reverse is alright. Give me some feedback. To me the colors look like the result of an old cleaning and it was graded XF. I'm certainly not an expert but it looks like a high VF, low XF to me. $76.

Baccaruda: Your new Bust Half has a lot of character as well as a lot of color!

Enjoy owning it because it's one of a kind.

Thanks - I haven't stopped looking at it today. You guys think XF is pretty accurate? - they are usually very fairly graded and they're usually good at pointing out problems.

Looks nice. I'd give it a high VF. The wing on the reverse shows too much wear to go XF. I would go XF on the obverse.

That was my assessment as well. It was the only thing in my mind keeping it from a higher grade.

    Nice coin.

If I had been at that bid board you would have had to pay more (I would have been bidding as well). image

    Enjoy your venture into classics.

I agree with the going assessment- high VF. Not enough detail to be EF.

    Very nice coin, however. image

baccaruda, may I suggest buying a copy of Photograde by James F. Ruddy, (c) 1995 by Bowers and Merena Galleries, Inc. (not sure if there is a newer one out yet). Photograde was designated in 1972 as an official grading guide by the ANA. I looked up your coin on page 125, and it grades VF+, IMHO. That is one foxy looking lady! I highly recommend that all serious coins collectors have this book.

thanks for the attribute Dorkkarl - and thanks for the tip on the book dollardude. I really can't afford to make bust halves the object of my desire, although it's gonna be tough now that I've tasted them.
