Dont give up on your old neighborhood bank branch

Today, after months of nothing - I got a call from one of the banks I use. The teller said she had a lady bring in some pennies. I said I was coming down for a deposit anyway, and went to check them out.

Nothing AMAZING, but I was able to get 35 rolls of wheat pennies at face. I would have to estimate that there is about 85% of these are wheat cents, the rest more modern. Someone just cashed them in. No idea of dates yet, just sorting the memorials out....

Anyway, happy hunting everyone.

Banks are a great place to look. I usually buy rolls of half dollars, and pick out the silver halves. Sometimes I even find Franklins. Just last week the teller that knows I collect coins, asked if I also collect currency. I said not really, but asked what he had. He gave me a very old $2 bill (silver cert) in almost uncirculated condition for face value.

Speaking of bank finds, in this week's NN is a letter that talks about a woman who started going through bank rolls of cents in January to the tune of $400 worth a week. It's nine months later, and her Lincoln set is only 11 coins short of complete!

Yes, it's got to be a lot of work to go through 40,000 cents every week, but she's got to be the luckiest person in the world.

  • She is lucky indeed but I would think that anybody that works that hard at anything is entitled to any reward they receive. Kudos to her for the hard work that it seems has paid off handsomely.

The head teller at my credit union saved a bunch of 40% Kennedies and sold them to me at face. I forget how many rolls there were. At least two or three. All AUish 40% Kennedies except for two coins: one was clad and one was a 90% silver 1964.

I absolutely agree she's deserving of whatever she finds. I was just amazed that by searching the equivalent of a little over 300 bags of cents from banks in one area she found that many different Lincolns (including the 1910-S, 1911-S and 1912-S).
