Do you think my 1864 L has retoned enough?

It got BB the last time for cleaning. Surprizing what a little egg soaked envelope wil do in a short period of time, the coin was pink! image

I think you got a shot at a grade of 60-63 by one of the big three as cleaned stuff in lower ms grades is pretty common. mike

How do you do this? Take an envelope and put an egg in it with the coin? lol..just curious, never done it. Leave it in there for a couple more months.

Wouldnt the egg be bad for the coins cholesterol?

I just soaked a yellow envelope in egg and let it dry before inserting the coin.

Where do I get that Sulphur in a bottle? Someone had a picture of some a long time ago!

    Interesting,

The albumin in eggs complexes with the copper ions. That is why chefs swear by copper pots/pans for egg dishes. It causes the eggs to stay firmer for a longer period of time.

Maybe the egg complexes with the copper and other agents used to clean the coin effectivly removing the residual cleaner and creating a uniform surface, hence a uniform/oxidized surface.

I'll have to play with some circulated wheats with some verdigri and see how they look (would it then be cleaning or conserving???) image

You should be able to get sulphur from a hobby store (basic chemistry kit) or ebay

    Some pharmacies carry sulphur.
You can also look up chemical supply in the yellow pages.

Oh yea, the coin needs to be darker.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

You may want to try a 19th century method. Put the coin in a small pouch made of cloth. Attach the cloth pouch to the inside of your clothing in an area where sweat builds up. Wear the clothing for awhile while you are active and sweating. Depending on your chemical makeup the coin may tone very rapidly.

This does work. I tried it some years ago with some cleaned civil war tokens. Excellent results in less than one day.

I'm thinking that piece is going to be bb'd for a long time to come no matter how dark you can get it. Copper's never really going to come back to an "uncleaned" looking state once the deed's been done.

If it was copper, I would bb it too!

BTW, WSM, have you tried using Kool-Aid to doctor up your coin so it's slabbable by your grading service of choice? I hear Kool-Aid has done miracles in so many other ways!

    LOL!

    BB for sure!

For a possible cure, try this: 2 parts HCL + 1 part HNO3 (That's hydrocloric acid & nitric acid mixed) you could dilute it a bit if you want. Then after soaking your doctored coin for a few minutes (don't leave it too long - it might not be there when you get back) rinse it thoroughly - then bury it in your back yard (remember to mark the spot) - water it for about a week - when you dig it up it will either be nice & brown - or maybe green - the end result will probably still be a BB - BUT - you will have had a LOT of fun with that ugly duckling -

Sulpher turns copper coins yellow then black - not recommended for high grade IHCs - but a good way to ruin an otherwise collectible coin

Hello, anybody home? Do you really think that the bronze vs copper issue matters for the ostrich egg and Kool-Aid methods?

Wallstreetman, a bronze IHC in 1864 was made with 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc.

So let me be sure I understand this, you want to take a cleaned coin and subject it to some process which will trick the graders into slabbing it for you? Sounds like an attempt at commiting fraud to me. You know what WSM, the truth will be known on judgement day. Can you spell hypocrite?

Do you realize that you're asking the membership to root for you while you try to get a problem coin slabbed? What would you do with the coin once it gets slabbed? And, will you disclose such detail when you try to sell it?
