RESULTS IN--Just Sent In 15 1979-P SBA Wide Rim Dollars To PCGS.......

RampageRampage Posts: 9,418 ✭✭✭✭
Please wish me luck. image I am hoping for a few 66s, but am expecting mostly MS65s and maybe one to three MS64s. They went in under the modern service, so, hopefully, by the end of September, I will see the results.

I am trying to build my Wide Rim stash back up. Originally, I bought a roll of Wide Rims from a board member, who will remain nameless. Out of those twenty, plus one that I had laying around, I got 6 MS66s, 10 MS65s and 5 MS64s. I sold all the MS64s-MS65s and 2 of the MS66s and kept the other two for me.

My recent submission had two MS66s and one MS65. I sold one of the MS66s and will sell the MS65, too.

My next submission will be a small batch of 1980-D SBAs.....Might send those out in a couple of weeks.

Sorry for this post.....I know most people do not care what I submit. imageimageimageimage

here is an excellent website regarding "small dollars". Good info, particularly on SBAs

The wide rim is also known as the near date. Early in the year the design
was modified for coinability and only about 3% of the mintage has the wide
rim. Like most '79 dollars these tend to be poorly struck &/or preserved.

They do not appear in regular (or regular souvenir) mint sets but are scarce
in the 3 piece special souvenir sets. (<3%)

I have one in a souvenir set. I had a hard time ever finding one till some time last year. I saw it on eBay with a Buy It Now of $10.00. I thought it was a heck of a deal. imageimage

As usual, the coins in the set are not high grade, but that is fine, since I just wanted it for my collection of my souvenir sets. If it was high grade, then I would have had to cut it out of the package.......I really did not want to do that.

No, it is the three piece set. Do you have one of the 5 piece sets with a wide rim?

So far as I know such a set doesn't exist, but since I can only account first
or second hand for about four hundred sets, I don't have a lot of confidence.

In fact, I've never heard of ANY regular souvenir set with ANY important var-
iety in it, unless you count the burnished coins that are reported to appear
    in some late date sets.

This is probably mere coincidence. All 270 coins in the 54 sets were probably
struck by well under 1000 die pairs and there just happened to be no varieties
involved. The regular mint sets represent around 400 or 500 die pair each year
and there are several years without significant varieties.

And when I did it everyone thought I was insane...... The SBA has much potential to be such a short series.

Not exactly thrilled as I believe most are undergraded. I really felt that at least a few were MS66 quality coins and most were MS65 quality. I expected some MS64, but not that many. Oh well. Richard.

By the way, order was received on 8/25/03 and no specified ship date yet. Probably tomorrow though.

Also, out of all the Wide Rims I sent in, this was the first time I ever got anything lower than an MS64.

I am kind of anxious to get them so I can see why the 63s came back as 63s. Maybe I missed something. I do not feel any are worth resubmitting, I guess.

    Relayer-

My last submission had two Type Two 1972 IKEs and three Wide Rims. Two of the three came back 66, the third came back 65. Maybe I should only send in two or three at a time. imageimage

I wonder if it does make a difference. If the grader just saw a bunch, maybe he uses the grades he just gave as a reference, if not intentionally at least it's fresh in his mind.

Including this batch, I have submitted a total of 49 Wide Rim coins. The breakdown of the grades are as follows:

    <MS63-----0
    MS63-----2
    MS64-----14
    MS65-----25
    MS66-----8
    >MS66-----0

I have seen several pop up on eBay over the last 2 years that graded AU58 and the sellers wanted like $$20.00 to 25.00 for them which of course is way too high, I think.

Now that I have had time to think about it, I guess I am not upset about the grades, just wish they were as I expected. I have not lost money onthem, that is for sure.

I had gotten 5 or 6 1979 SBA's when they first came out. I looked through them when I started collecting again a couple years ago and found 3 were wide rim. All are high AU or low MS. One of my few interesting circulation finds.

Here is to hoping you're completely WRONG with your prediction and at least one comes back MS67.

I can live with an MS66 in my collection. It would be great to actually make a 67 some day, but I will not hold my breath.

I only have about 8 raw Wide Rims now. I depleted the rest of my hoard and will sell these when I get them back from PCGS. I might put the raw ones on eBay. I do not think they will grade higher than MS63, so it is no big deal.

I really like the wide rim SBAs! They're easy to spot, it's not like the type 1 and 2 proofs for the SBA series.
