I just wanted to say thanks to all the Registry members who stopped by my table. It was really nice to put faces with names. Whether we were able to do any business or not, it is enjoyable to meet a group as enthusiastic and knowledgable about the hobby and basically just nice people as well. A special thanks to King Kellogg for his hospitality on Saturday. Larry, thanks again. (I promise one of these days I'll make a Kelloggs find and they'll all be yours). Thanks too to Dude for his kind words and for his great job in chronicling the event. Thanks Dan. I hope to see some of you at the Labor Day Show in San Francisco or the Fort Washington show in September.

norty -- Thanks for the nice message. I probably won't be going to either of those shows. Maybe I'll catch you at the Pittsburgh show next Spring.

Hi Joe, I'm looking forward to visiting your table at the SF show. If I recall, this is your first West Coast show in some time. This will be my first chance to go through your inventory. I hope there are some NM-MT cards left after the National seige. image

I'll be busy throughout August breaking down new material for San Francisco as well as re-filling books. I hope you'll find something you like. What years are you most interested in?

    Hello everyone!!!

    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    .
    ..................I'm totally worn out!!!!!!!

I, quite frankly, had the best time ever....Where do I start?

I met so many great guys and listened to so many "card stories" that I came away from the National in a daze!!..... What an experience!!! I liken it to WOODSTOCK in the late 60's, or the day they dismantled the Berlin Wall. Just an enormous, moving experience that I will never forget!

    Hello and many thanks.....
to the first person that I recognized from the boards. First thing Thursday morning, right at the opening bell, I made a bee-line to Set Builders table (remember guys...it's table #790...ha..). Introduced myself to Joe Tauriello. Asked him if any of the other board members had stopped by, and to my suprise, all 3 fellows sitting with their heads buried in card books, popped up and said they ALL were!!! Frank Bakka (FB), Ray Boehm (RayBShotz), and Eric (EjGuru). We all had a few laughs, then I bought a couple nice '59's (maybe the big 1959 guys hadn't been there yet..hee..hee...). A big salute to Joe. First class all the way. Personable, professional, and really down to Earth. It's no wonder he has the admiration of the board members. A little note Joe...Pass on a word of thanks to your assistant Bob. Well versed and really watched your back side when you were out on the floor "shopping".

    Hello and many thanks......
To the guys at the Summit dinner Thursday night at Sabatini's. I sat close to gaspipe, Ron Ritlinger, SJJS28 , and ejguru...talked and laughed my ass off at some of the funny stories being unfolded in front of me. Got a few conversations in with all the guys, but time got short and couldn't really talk with the guys at the other end of the table. I really missed chatting with the other "card wizards" like Alan, Ray, Ron S, Ron B, Wayne and Dan. Maybe next year, we all can swich about "mid meal" and play a little musical chairs. I wouldn't mind a "3 night" summit. More guys could make it and we all could "mingle" a little more. Special note...Ron R...Give up your day job and become a standup comic!!! Too funny!!! Please count me in for whatever is planned for Cleaveland.

    Hello and many thanks......
Later that night, after all the board members were off to the auction, I wandered over to Trump Plaza to meet one of my all time true idols.......Mr 1970 Kellogg himself...THEGEMMINTMAN. I almost missed my chance to meet this legend as we were supposed to meet at a pre-determined place (one of Trumps bars of course...) and he was sitting on the other side of the bar from me (and neither one of us know what the other guy looks like). Finally the bartender asked to help and the long waited meeting took place. GMM is as likable and as professional as they get. We hit it off right from the get-go! After a few GEMMINTMAN beverages, we hit the casino floor, and proceded to take a few hard dollars from Mr Trump. At one Krap table, Gemmy had the dice, give them a good toss, and yelled out PSA 9!!!!!!!!! Almost fell on the floor laughing... "It's what I thought of at that moment" claimed GMM. Again .....Too funny!!!!! Time ran out and we set our seperate ways....

    Hello and many thanks........
to the three "hard bodies" that stopped and chatted with me in the middle of the show. I think they were the actresses that were there signing autographs from the Termimator3 movie, or something like that. Couldn't tell you their names (actually, they all told me, but I was concentrating on their other "assets".....Hmmmmmmm......) Right place , at the right time......

    Hello and many thanks.......
to the staff of PSA. I think it's fairly easy to sit behind a computer and find fault with just about anything. PSA actions and policys included. If you ever have a doubt on the ability OR the focus of any part of PSA, you need to get in a plane and go meet Joe Orlando and his staff. These gracious people, that grade our most prized gems, are the best there is. I have had an oppourtunity to speak with Joe on the phone, and have a few emails with BJ, but nothing compares to a "face-to-face" meeting with which I came away with a feeling of total satisfaction. Up front, and professional is the way I see it. Thanks for the time you both allowed me and all my crazyness. Let's not forget Gayle too..... Many thanks!!!

    Hello and many thanks......
to the members that couldn't make it this year... I'm just a hollow shell of a man, because I didn't get to meet Jay Wolt. For the folks that made the PSA luncheon, could you imagine "Qualitycards Jay and I at the same table??? ...(That might of been too much, even for a casino town...ha....). A few other guys I wanted to meet was the great Zardoz, Dave Jacobs (Stump), and Neal Kane (1420sports). I'll look for you guys and all the rest of the board members that couldn't attend, at next years National.

    Hello and many thanks.......
to all the board members that showed up at the PSA luncheon. WOW!!!!!! (I can say that can't I??)
Got to meet many, MANY guys from the boards...I know I will miss a few, but Hi to Wolfbear, Ron Hobbs and his son Ryan, Marc (MikeSchmidt), and Ian Ricaboni to name just a few ( a special hello to Mrs. Ricaboni too. Quite a son you have. It's like he has 300 Dads, all pulling for him...ha....), THE GEMMINTMAN, Tipem, Playball, Tony Aconte and, Shane Leonard, Scoop, and all the '72 guys...Frank Bakka and his charming wife Lynn, Neil Downey and his son, and all the other 100 attendees present. Again....So little time....So many great people. (The chicken wasn't that bad either...!) I spent so much time yakkin' that I didn't even get a chance to have a free beer...Oh well...I'll drink 2 next year!!!

The speech by BJ and then Joe was focused and rang true.

    I got this...

PSA wants to do the right thing....

We are an "open door" kind of management.......

    No half point grading..............

nuff said...............Thanks Joe, BJ, and staff!

Couldn't stay for the rest of the speech, or listen to the CEO of CU. The National scheduled Mike Schmidt and Reggie Jackson to sign autos at the same time as the PSA luncheon. Hey Ian...that cheesecake was pretty good huh???

    Hello and a "special" thanks......
to the Kellogg's Kollectors that made the show. Steve Wolfe that keeps me "honest" on all the eBay offerings, GMM, Dan Markle, Ian, and all the other K Krazies at the show and abroad. We all started with 1 set and 1 registered owner...Now there are over 100 Kellogg's collectors on the Registry....

So all in all, I would give this AC thing a solid 10, because of all the great people that make this "kind" of hobby so wonderful...

    Here 'Ye... Here 'Ye.....

It is proclaimed for..... All Registry members, quality dealers, whether you collect old or new, no matter your age or gender, shall have as your charge, a grand meeting to be held in Cleaveland in 2004 !!!

    By order of your King...

  • I was very sad indeed to miss the National (especially when it was less than 3 hours from my house ...) Unfortunately about 1 month ago my job was eliminated in a corporate restructuring (they killed the division I was working in and 80% of the sales force lost their jobs.) ... So now I am mired in a new job hunt and hope to be employed by September ...But until I find a new job I will be limiting any new cards I buy to being balanced by sales... Sounds like a good time was had by alll ... Hopefully I can talk the MRS into allowing me to go to Cleveland next year.....

I was about 4 1/2 hours away and had a late thursday night.I was preparing to go but some really nice cards were on ebay to thin out the cash flow and earlier in the week I went wild at the GHO.

I regret missing this meeting but I'm glad to hear all the insight from some of the greatest collectors who did attend the show and meeting.

Thanks for a review of what was missed but thanks for making us feel like we were there.

Maybe I'll catch the next one in the next 15 years that comes by this area.

<< <i>My biggest diappointment was not getting to meet aconte. I happened upon a guy flipping through some high end Redmans and I stopped and asked him if he was Tony...but I had just missed him. >>

    Dude,

Thanks for posting the pic. It was nice meeting you and all the other guys.

    Alan,

I heard you were looking for me. I just missed you. The gentleman you met was 'mrredman'
He's provided me with a ton of cards. I asked if you were at the luncheon. But King Kellogg
did not see you. I was disappointed I did not get to meet you either. Time went so fast.
I really enjoyed my 1st National. I hope to go again soon.

Well, I unfortunately can not read all the threads. I'm on vacation now and got a quick break
at a cyber-cafe while my wife and cousin have a coffee.

I'll post again soon I hope. I really had a good time at the shows meeting many different
collectors and dealers too. Have a good week all. And thanks for the memories!

    gemmy,

I can tell you that the 67 and 71 book were very, VERY nice at 10:00 am on Thursday morning. They were a little less so, by 10:20. Oh... and Bob Cacamese did a number on the 69 and 64 books during the same timeframe. After losing the race to the 67 book to Mr. Saldutti at Fort Washington last time, I had my running shoes on!

aconte -- It was terrific meeting you too!

I did get to meet a few other people who didn't attend either of the formal functions. One was the Duke of Mint. He's a fun person and really enjoys the hobby. I got to chat with him for about 15 minutes at Paul Stark's table.

Another collector I met was Jeff Gobin from the Boston are who collects '69 Topps Baseball. Another terrific guy!

Another person I bumped into was Rob deLorimier (Current #1 - 1971 Topps Baseball collector on the Registry). As some of you may recall, Rob bought a 1966 Mays from WIWAG with a questionable holder. Original Link

He told me that it worked out OK and that he was fully refunded for his purchase and the card was re-graded as PSA 7.

    Hi All,

    Where to start!!

I would DEFINATELY say that the luncheon was the highlight of the national.I doubt that there was a room of 100 people anywhere in AC that had more card knowledge or more class than was apparent in our room.I would like to acknowledge a few people that I met our the table.SJJS28,BOBS,WAYNE8348,ACONTE,and MITOCHONDRIA.Really great guys that I would have stay at my house in Fla anytime they are down my way.I would like to say a special hello to BUCKWHEAT(who was also at our table). It was great meeting you after the PM's that we exchanged. Also, to SCOOP,Your knowledge of 56's is amazing and it was truely my pleasure meeting you.It was also nice to meet FB(Frank and his wife Lynn).

As for the King,HE really is "THE KING" He is more lively in person than you could ever imagine.
From talking to MERCERFAN,He probably should change his icon name to "WILDMAN".I was disappointed that he was not wearing a cheese hat and did not bring any dancing cheese with him.

A special thanks to DUDE for taking pictures and this post.He is a class act all by himself.
Also to TWINRON for all his help.

    THE53KID,

It was reallyimage to talk cards and experiences with you and I was sorry to not see you at the luncheon.

I was genuinely impressed with all the staff at PSA during the show and especially at the luncheon.
BJ, I hope that they realize what a gem they have in you and are compensating you accordingly.
JOE, It was good to hear you comments on the direction that PSA is heading and I left the luncheon with a more secure feeling about PSA and its future.I was impressed with the way that you handled the impromptu Q&A session and would encourage board members to be more proactive with Joe as I will be in the future.

There was one board member that introduced himself to me and thanked me for welcoming him to the boards.I cannot remember who it was.I feel as though I didn't really get to talk to you and would like to hear from you. Please PM me or e-mail me.

I would have liked to have attended the dinner and hope that it will be publicized more(3rd gathering) as I would have enjoyed more time with the board members.

My only regret is that I didn't work the room and meet more board members, but I will do that at next years luncheon for sure!!

As far as the nationals went,I thought that there were not near as much raw high grade cards as I was expecting and the high grade(7 and above) stars were really overpriced in my opinion. It was amazing to see so many stunning high grade vintage cards.I just wish they were more affordable.image I am saving my money already!!
Only 359 more days until next yearimage

    Tipem (Vic)
Please be kind to me. Even though I'm now a former postal employee, I'm still capable of snapping at any time.

Thanks Dude for posting this thread.

Nationals was an amazing experience. Wayne and I flew out of Cincinnati together. About 30 minutes into the flight, the plane shuttered, dropped, then made about 3 dozen consecutive 360 turns. We had blown an engine. We returned to Cincy and were greeted by many emergency response vehicles with lights and sirens, etc. Long story short, we were rerouted through Philly. I was luckily bumped into first class, and sat next to Dave Parker for the flight. Heckuva nice guy and very patient with the demands of his celeb status. He fielded many questions regarding the Pete Rose trial. We rented a van in Philly and took 4 other collectors to AC. Wayne was the navigator, and he was able to get the the dinner on Thursday.

The PSA lunch was incredible. I want to thank Joe and BJ for setting it up. Certainly top notch experience. The not so planned Q&A session was handled very well by Joe. And the questions were certainly not 'gimme's'.

Unfortunately it was difficult to meet everyone in the room. I sat with Aconte, Sellerman23, Wayne, Tipem and Son of TIpem, and enjoyed the conversation a great deal. I especially enjoyed meeting Rusty Willy, Gemmint, Playball, and Ian. Spoke with Dude, Wolfbear, Mito briefly among others. The strongest personality in the room was King K (without a doubt).

As for the show itself -- I was disappointed in the Red Man selection. I did pick up quiet a few tobacco and caramel cards though. And I moved about 2 dozen cards which was good.

If one purely looks at Nationals from a cost perspective, its better to buy on ebay and put the money that goes to hotel/airfare/etc back into the cards. The prices were full retail. But the overall experience of speaking with the dealers and collectors made the trip more than worthwhile.
Where have you gone Dave Vargha
CU turns its lonely eyes to you
What's the you say, Mrs Robinson
Vargha bucks have left and gone away?
