Rotated Reverse IHC question 1864-L (pics added)

I got a 1864-L indian head cent today and when you flip it over the rev. is upside down and when you flip it horzontally then the rev is right side up. Is this a known error on the 1864-L or is it a sign of a counterfit?

    Sounds like a rotated-reverse variety...or would that be...error.
Anyway,Change the title of the thread to `Rotated Reverse IHC question`
and you might get better responses from those that might know.

That is a very well known error and most likely will be variety S-10. I own one in AU58 and have had two other ones in the past, with the number I have seen over the years I would guess that over 100 exist and all I have seen or heard of had medal rotation of 180°.

Is it worth sending to ANACS to see if it's real or a cast counterfit?

Paul (Shylock) is also another good source for IHC info.
Try PMing him would be another option to this thread.

    Good Luck.image

edited to add , I think its worth slabbibg. Even if it were `common`
XF-AU RB ? Its a nice coin in my eyes.

btw, could the green stuff be gotten rid of without doing anything to the
    rest of the coin?

    Copper is tricky I think.
Leave it? Or ....Ee gads..NOT THE DIP !!!! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!

The raised lumps on both sides make me think possibly struck from spark erosion dies (Also known as EDM or electric discharge machine dies) but usually EDM coins look higher grade than that.

The raised lumps bother me as well. I am also looking at the date and it's shifted to the left some. All the examples that I can find have the date fully under the indian's bust, where this one looks like it is shifted to the left of the indian's bust.

Look at the following page(s) for the examples that I am looking at:

I looked thru Snows book on flying eagles and indain head cents and mine is an S10 with doubling on the date and the rotated rev. The reason it looks like it does is because it was in a fire. So far that is all i know. I'm going to be sending it to ANACS soon and see what they have to say about it.
