I will be there for a few days, and wanted to know if anyone had any recommendations.

Thanks.

Here's a short list, San Antonio's my home town.

    Short list

I don't know if Medlar's is still around, but the wife of the owner is the one who had an affair with Henry Cisneros, former Mayor of San Antonio, Secretary of HUD. Because of that little problem he was indicted on 18 felony counts of false statements, conspiracy to defraud and obstruction of justice. Oops!

Alamo Heights rarely has any slabbed material. More like a coin shop from 20 years ago. They will pay 70% bid when buying--even on poor quality items. I sold some badly toned modern clad proof sets, and was happy to walk away at 70%.

Lone Star will have some slabbed materials. I bought a Seated nickel off them once. I think they have some real experts working there.... like a guy who discovered a significant Buffalo nickel variety.

Royalty is down in the river walk area. I never made it into the shop, but they did have a largte quantity of PCGS & NGC slabs (Mostly Morgans) at a show once. No experience with the others.

Thanks for the help! Gotta mix pleasure with work sometimes -- and have some motivation to go to meetings with hundreds of lawyers while I am down there . . . (bleck!)

  • Lone Star is very good, and the owner very nice. Good selection.

Can't speak for the coin shops, but don't pass up the two best steak houses in town - Ruth Chr--- out toward the Alamo dome and is it Morgan's (?) in the vicinity of the Alamo. The one near the Alamo has the world's best crab claw appetizers. Have fun on the riverwalk. During the Gulf War when I was there on business Bob Hope was in town floating down the Riverwalk having Silver Bells serendaded to him as part of his last Bob Hope Christmas special. Neat place to enjoy a few days. Last time I was there we had an extra day so drove out of town an hour or so to the arch caverns. Not quite up to Carlsbad, but still worth the visit.
