2003 Silver Eagle error?

Bear in mind as you read this that I am the ultimate novice, and have no background in "coin collecting. I am however trying to learn the ropes, as I seem to be addicted to buying Morgans and Silver Eagles. On to the question: I bought a roll of 2003 Silver Eagles and quickly put them into airtites for storage. It was not until a couple of days later that I noticed a difference between these 2003's and my SE's from other mint years. The sun on the face of all 20 of the 2003's has a raised area on the lower half that makes the sun appear to be what can best be described as a mutated yin-yan sign. On all of my other years the sun is perfect with no rasied areas at all. Is this a strike error? I would appreciate any input that could be offered. Thanks in advance, and sorry for my lack of savvy lingo. imageimage

    Welcome to the board, ryanmp.

We would really need a picture of the coin to tell what is happening.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • imageWelcome aboard, and hold on tight!! This may be a bumpy ride for awile.

The new Eagles are a little strange. They have several halos in the obverse while rotating them aroud. The most noticable spot is on the sun.:coolimage

Welcome! Now I will have to go compare my 2 2003 ASE's with the other years. Interesting observation.
  • I noticed the same thing.....I've been waiting for someone to bring this up!!!! Thanks.

That is more dramatic the bunch I went through, I have only seen a couple of examples without some kind of blotch on the sun. For me it is a luster break. I have seen the same(of what I have) on graded pieces also from both sides of the street.

Big picture,,, but you'll get the idea,

I would say its an error of some kind. As for valuable, who knows, they are bullion, kind of a neat little oddity ,,want to trade one??image

Edit; the pic was not of your error, I was thinking of another I saw while doing researchimage

Bought 2 rolls of year 2003 ASE's about a week ago. Went through the 10 extra I had posted on the BS&T board a few days ago. They all seem to be normal strikes with respect to the error described in this thread.
