O.k. Here's the situation; Lets say you see a coin that has a sharp strike blazing full luster and a pretty but also original look to the color, it's in a p.c.g.s. slab and it's in a series you collect, and it really appeals to you. Put on your collector caps for a minute and forget "profit potential" If the coin was not technically high end for the grade for contact marks, would yo buy the coin anyway if the coin had a look that appealed to you? I have 2 such coins and i don't regret either one of them.

It is difficult buying coins that excell in all the catagories you mentioned. My rule is this:

If the coin has an overall pleasing appearence, if it is in the technical grade you desire and

if you really like the coin, then purchase it if the price is in or near the range of fair. Each

collector places different values on things such as contact marks, luster, strike, origonal color and

overall appearence. What may be appealing to you may be a pass for another. If you have gained

enough experience ,what constitutes a pleasing coin for the grade, then you will find the majority

of collectors in agreement with you. Always try to sell a few items from time to time. That will

be the best indication if you are purchasing ,what the community considers pleasing and acceptable

I have never purchased a coin with 'profit potiential' in mind, the same goes for my car collection, comic collection and everything I collect... If the HepKitty seez somethin' she really digs, I'll buy it!

I don't really care all that much what the grade is, if I like it I'll buy it...assuming the price is not astronomical. Of course, the price of the coin is part of the decision on whether I "like" it. Know what I mean?

Yes, I'd buy them. And I would never look back. I actually have a few coins in for slabbing right now that may have profit potential but I love them. 2 55 frankies with blazing luster (I never use that term unless it's exceptionally reflective for me), steel blue color, and red on the other side. But I also have some ordinary looking morgan dollars that just have a certain charm to them. My collecting started as being hoarding, then registry collection, now it's about what grabs my attention and who care about the rest.

Most of my coins were aquired because I liked the look of the coin. I expect to hold them for some time now so they only have to appeal to me for me to buy them. There a a few empty holes in my sets that are not due to a lack of available coins but rather because I have not found the coins that have the "look" that says buy me now before someone else does.

Absolutely BUY it....

I bought a toned Morgan from board member jbsteven...a common date MS61 with a beautiful rainbow...and it's one of the prettiest and favorite coins in my collection.

I think you did OK. The price is high, but the coin is rare enough to justify the price. You must be building one great set?
