Observations on 76 proof sets, agree or disagree

I have gone through numerous sets of this year. No I am not trying to make the coin you would think. I have gotten mostly all pr68dc-pr69 Ikes. I am trying to make the 76 penney in pr 69dc. So far I haven`t founnd any that I thought were even close. The premium seems to be the Ikes. But is the penney in that grade as illusive as I am finding it. I think this an under appreciated coin as compared to the Ikes.

  • I've found it to be a lost cause. After searching through about 50 sets, I only found one that I thought was worth submitting. I submitted it, and it came back PCGS PR66 CAM. It has a full DCAM obverse, with a borderline DCAM reverse. PCGS didn't think the reverse was full DCAM. Plus the coins come with quite a few marks. The 1976 PCGS PR69 DCAM Lincolns are worth every penny people pay for them!

I agree that the cents are very tough to 69DCAM.

hmmm. That's interesting. I assume that would include both the 3 piece set and the regular proof set. I haven't really ever considered what grade I might get, but, it SEEMS I've encountered some outstanding specimens in the 3 piece set.

The 1976 clad set is a lot tougher than most people think. Take for example, the Kennedy half. There are five times as many '76 silvers in 69DCAM as there are clads, yet there is little market price difference between the two.

1976 was sort of the transition year for the mint; right before they began to get their act together consistently producing solid cameo clad coinage in each set. Years prior (1971-1975), were very difficult for DCAMs, 1976 got a little easier, from 1977 on easy.

    Gilbert,

There were no cents in the three-piece set.
