I helped look through several hundred proof and mint sets in the last few days, a couple of large purchases that the local guy made. There were mint sets ranging from 1962-1974 and proof sets from 1956-1997. I will admit to not searching anything past 1981 because I wasn't really tuned into anything to really look for, varieties and such. Any suggestions would be welcomed for the next group, he gets lots like this rather often. It's just a matter of whether my work schedule allows me to get first crack at the stuff.
He asked me to check the 1970 mint and proof sets for that small date/level 7 variety and the 1979 and 1981 proof sets for T2 SBA's, leaving the rest for me to pick out as i chose. Here's what we found.
There was one T2 SBA from about 33-1981 sets and none in 43-1979 sets. There were no proof sm. date 1970's but we did find 3 in the mint sets along with one prooflike 1970-D Kennedy. One of the 1956 proof sets had a cameo T2 half, hazed over but clean. it was in a minila envelope from the mint that opened on the short side and it had cardboard inserts to protect the coins, something I had never seen before. I assume this was an early type of mailing used by the mint that was discontinued later in 1956. Too bad, it seems like a good idea. Anyone else ever see these??
What did i keep?? I asked him to set the 1956 set aside for me after this weekends show, but I really don't expect it to last. There were 3-1965 SMS sets that had frosted nickels and one frosted half, one 1969 mint set with a for sure MS66-67 half and a nickel with killer prooflike fields and a cameo obverse!! At first I thought it may have been an accidental proof inserted in the pack but it's a "D" mint so just an early strike. Cool coin. One of the 1970 mint sets had a really clean half so I kept that and there was one each of 1973 and 1974 mint sets with very clean dollars and full step nickels, though the nickels would probably only go MS64. From the proof sets I kept only a couple of 1970's and one 1972 with a great looking jefferson. I'm determined to make a 69DCAM, got about 3-4 that I'm close to submitting.
On a side note, one of the club guys stopped in today while I was searching and we had a brief talk. It turns out his folks were married in 1936 and his dad picked up 3 proof sets at the time. He continued to buy them from the mint, 3 a year through 1942 with both types for that year. When they resumed proof sets in 1950 he resumed his purchases but increased it to 5 a year through 1964 and quit when they started the SMS sets and never started up again cause he didn't like the clad coinage!!!!! The kicker is that he says his dad never opened up any of the sets. I don't know how many are still left but he has sold some on eBay with the seller ID of coinmaster.
I hope this encourages everyone to seek out those mint/proof sets. Many that i searched were fresh as a daisy. They're still out there, so keep looking!!

Yep, see them quite frequently at shows. I think I may also have seen some '57 sets packaged the same way, but I'm not sure on that. The later '55 sets were also packaged like that.
Russ, NCNE
and some common 85 DD dimes. There's a really neat 88-P half with a rotated reverse.
Mostly with these later date sets I'm just looking for sharp proof likes.
Don't forget to watch for the '81-P quarter with type D reverse. They're tough but they're
out there.
See my tag line. They're easy to look for. BTW - put up a pic of the 69 Jeff and the 70 half. I love the clean hard fields some of those coins posess.
and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor
