1994 P & 1997 P Matte Finish Jeffs

These are the `special uncirculated`with the Matte Finish to make them look like Proofs but are actually Business-strikes.
These are very low mintage,especially the `97 P.
Any thoughts about these coins?

When the mint made the 1997 matte finish nickel : mintage- 30,000 or so, they put a cap of 30,000 on the nickel sets that can be completed. I am sure that made alot of the Jeff. nickel collectors mad.

I really like the 1994 & 1997 matte nickels. I purchased a 1994 coin & currency setb that had a two dollar star note in it.

I have never heard any complaints from Jefferson collectors on these SMS coins. Both the 1994 & 1997 have satiiny surfaces with sharp strikes. Both years are readily available in high grades at reasonable prices. However, try finding these in MS70FS!

Of course I have the 97 model several times over, slabbed and in the original pink & green Mint holder. I don't go gaga over them but do find them slightly interesting. A true Modern rarity. As more Commem Mint sets are destroyed to send the coins in for grading the sets get more rare every day. A good thing to have sitting in your safe.

I like them. It is a neat finish. To me they are Matte Proofs and very attractive. I too have them, both slabbed and in the original Coin and Currency sets.

One thing I have noticed about alot of the 1994,1997 coin & currency sets is the coins reverses tone vivid yellow and gold when left in the orginal holders. Must be something in the paper.

The other day when I bought my `94 set I noticed too the reverse was nearly all golden / yellow.No prob there.I kinda like it anyway.
My `97 set Jeff is still untoned.

What is the overall condition of these?
I noticed a few teeny tiny flaws in both.Either a tiny break in the frost or planchet flaw that resembles a contact mark.
I,d have to grade mine in the original holders MS68.
Is that the average?

Mine seem perfect. The ones in the sets look just like the ones in the 69 holders. They haven't started toning yet either.

Between $300 and $400 I think in the mint set, both are "coin and currency" sets I believe.

My 94 reverse has also turned a perfect red/gold. Plus the dollar in the set has a nice arc of the same with a star note to boot.
