Opinions of David Lawrence's New Website Design

Personally, I can't stand it, the old method of searching for coins was so much easier. They now have it setup like the start programs menu on Windows. I like to search around there when I get bored, but this will be cut down now, though I have only purchased two or three coins from them only, so I hope no one thinks I am pimping their site. Any other opinions on their new website design?

I don't like it either, it was not an improvement over what was already in place.

  • Make sure everyone fills out the questionaire on the home page and let them know. I'm a big fan of David Lawrence (the organization), but I also dislike this new website.

I LOVE it myself. I thought the old website was much harder to use to get to specific coins with specific characteristics. I really like it much better.

I notice on their Advanced Search page that they no longer let you search for anything but PCGS or NGC slabs -- I guess they've completely given up on all the rest of the services.
  • One of my favorite features of the previous website was the ability to search all new coins as of one day. Now I have to go back two days, which means I see a lot of the same stuff twice. Sounds trivial, but it's the trivial stuff that makes or breaks a site.

First blush - its not a winner. I do alot of website work myself and although it looks slick, it doesn't live up to the promise. The principal is KISS: Keep It Simple Stupid. It should be fast to load, simple to navigate, easy find what you're looking for. I actually think their pictures look worse...or maybe my glasses are getting dirty again <g>.

  • Boy, you guys (and gals!) are a tough crowd. We've been working on this new site design for over 9 months and I was really excited about its launch this week. Reviews have certainly been mixed so we're scambling to do everything possible to make everyone happy. Of course, the fact that everyone has a different computer makes that almost impossible. Please bear with us as we continue to tweak the new site. It'll get better and better.

Here are some reply's to your comments:

KISS: In respsonse to the KISS criticism, the old site was broken, in some ways. We were limited with the future ability to interface with our back end database and increase inventory, etc. A lot of the new features of the site are invisible to the end user but critical for our growth.

Menu System: We thought at first that using cascading menus on the left side would be a big plus, because it would allow users to access inventory from a single click at any place in the site. As it turns out, the code was really slowing down the site for some users so Greg and I worked until midnight last night and changed the menu system. I think the pages will load much faster now.

New Purchases: As far a 1-day of new purchases, we can easily fix that. In fact, for now you can use this link (and bookmark it) if you want access to 1 day of new coins: http://www.davidlawrence.com/coins/SearchResults.cfm?PickSeries=New&numdays=-1&display=1

Advanced Search: We noticed that very few people were looking for anything but PCGS and NGC but we'll put ANACS back in for starters.

Remember, that the web site is only the most superficial aspect of our organization. We still pride ourselves in giving the best customer service in the biz and who else has 4300 certified coins for sale. We added about 600 new coins last week alone.

Thanks again for your feedback. We're on the case!

Maybe a Fats Domino or Ritchie Valens picture on the main page will help!

I never used the "old" web site but, found the "new" one to be
very easy to get around and my connections were fast
and smooth, no problems here. I think people hate change.image

I like it - my only problem is when the mouse wanders off the pull down menues, I have to go back to square one - same on Heritages site - need a steadier hand, I guess.

So, John, when is David Lawrence going to step up to offering non-US coinage and/or currency? Is that among the "growth areas" you are considering?

I like the improvements that you have made since you changed it. Great site, great coins too.
  • Thanks everybody. We've made a ton of improvements since my last posting. Specifically Greg recoded the left side menu which, it turns out, was sloooowing down the entire site for some percentage of users (not all). Anyway, that was a huge problem. We're going to have a 1-day new purchases link by tomorrow as well as printer-friendly coin & currency viewing pages. Keep the feedback coming. We're making fixes at an average rate of 1 an hour!

Askari: In response to your question, we don't currently have any plans to sell foreign coins or currency. To be honest, I'd like to expand into U.S. gold a little more (better dates, not "generic"). We've also tossed around the idea of having a live auction. Other thoughts include certified comic books, or even gemstones. Anything is possible here at DLRC, as long as it conforms with our general philosophy of selling third-party graded collectibles with an emphasis on value and customer service. We will ALWAYS be most dedicated to certified coins, though.

  • Ah, well, if you have to slab them, John .... imageimage

Actually, take a look at Northeast Numismatics. They appear to have found themselves a niche with higher-end slabbed world coinage. In fact, they've really made a niche for themselves. It might offer some better upside potential than treading where everybody else has gone.

  • Hi! We don't have the firepower of a David Lawrence, but for the absolute simplest-to-use website, I think our website (not quite done yet) is about as easy and basic as it gets - and fast too! It's like the other end of the spectrum from a high-end joint like DLRC.

    Great site, D. L. !

Personally, I found them both just fine. To me, it is the content of a site, not its design that makes or breaks it.

  • I agree with tjkillian,

as long as I can get around a site without much trouble all I care about is nice coins and the right price. A big plus also is if you can add pictures to most of them,I know lots of man hours.image

John I have brought several nice US coins from your website in the past and have always had great service.
I am with Askari I think it would be great if you guys started selling some dark side ( Foriegn coins ).
