Older holders

I agree that many times PCGS appears to have been rather strict (at times) with grading (in reference to 1st Gen. slabs), but hardly in every instance as some buyers appear to believe. Overall, was NGC also "just a tad" more conservative with their grading years ago? Just curious. Opinions?

    Tracker,
Both PCGS & NGC were tighter on their grading in the early years.imo. I like PCGS rattler holders(1st gen.), NGC green label(1st gen.) and NGC no line holders.

  • I agree, but only to a point. IMHO, PCGS has NEVER been as tough on copper (esp. early Lincolns) as they now appear to be. MS67 today? fugeddahboudit!!!

  • Every "old" NGC holder that I've sent to PCGS has crossed or up graded.

Generally speaking from a Morgan collector's point of view, yes.

Most of my classic commems are in 1st generation PCGS holders and I can honestly say that they would all upgrade at least one point...if I wasn't too chicken to crack them out image

I haven't noticed this to any great extent in gold. It's likely that a lot of the better old-holder coins have been upgraded.

  • NGC black holders, when you can find them carry a nice premium. Most of older holdered coins have been picked over, and have been resubmitted.
