NGC now plays with the big boys on Copper

NGC just announced that they will guarantee copper in thier new slabs for 10 years... guess that they finally figured out how to truly seal the slab.

announcement was made in prior posts to. my take on it: about freaking time.

ok, i'll open myself up to the sticks & stones: i think ngc is a step ahead of pcgs in general, but in this regard, certifying copper, they've been far behind. heck, they've been way behind just in terms of grading copper. i have looked at countless slabs over the years, & though i have zilch for hard statistics, i have long had the impression that ngc's grading lags well behind that of pcgs's (which itself falls well short of ideal).

what i'm trying to say is that ngc's commitement to properly graded copper has not been on par w/ pcgs. i've seen far to many awful coins in overgraded ngc plastic.

hopefully, their recent change of heart is a step toward better commitment.

You mean my properly graded NGC IHC's will finally get respect instead of smirks??

The jury is still out on NGCs copper guarantee. First you have to have your coins reholdered into the new slabs. Even then, the guarantee is only good for ten years. Is that enough to close the gap with PCGS? I doubt it. Sounds like too little, too late to me.

  • Once again NGC starts climbing up the PCGS ladder. 1st Montgomery; then slippage in PCGS prices, PCGS relaxes grading, Bowers and staff fired, PCGS guarantee being challanged. Maybe the 24% of my 225+collection in NGC holders and other 76% PCGS holders needs to be reassed. Could the king be losing his thrown? Think I may just give a little harder look at NGC. NGC seems to be moving ahead while PCGS is having problem after problem. Is this a sign? Of course, there will always be the die-hard PCGS "snobs".

May I ask where you got the information that PCGS prices are slipping and that PCGS has relaxed their grading (standards)? This is news to me and is inconsistent with the coin market I know.

rays....ditto.....prices are strong and grading has been tougher than ever.

  • I'm thinking that tg's statement meant to imply that NGC prices are going up, not that PCGS's are going down.

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

  • Rays, I think older pCGS copper prices will start to suffer. Much of the stuff in older slabs is crap and would not grade the same way today. I for one am not buying older PCGS copper any longer.

btw, my earlier comments about ngc being behind pcgs was in reference to early copper only. i don't think they're much different on small-cents - but the vast majority of my experience in comparisons has been with early copper.

  • That brings up an interesting side-point... will NGC now be putting the grading date on their slabs so a purchaser can see how much time is left on the guarantee?

That something I've long wanted (for other reasons) from both PCGS and NGC.

Nope, they said you can tell by the slab type (the new sealed holder). And maybe allow you to find the "born on" date from online or by phone call. but they are not putting the date on the slab.

From what I understand, the NGC 'guarantee' needs to be reviewed carefully. This only applies to newly slabbed copper. Re the older material, they must 'review' it, which means more grading fees and the submitter may still be turned down for the particular coin in question re this 'guarantee.' The other post is right re the grade guarantee; they will have to start dating the slabs, which IMO is LONG overdue.

In general, I have stated for years that NGC old copper in MS 60 plus as a rule has more problems for the grade than the PCGS counterpart, though NGC DOES get it right from time to time.

Clackamas, by old copper, are you referring to Draped Bust Copper, Braided Hair Copper, or what? You didn't specify. I think PCGS is fairly consistent re grading Unc. Half Cents from Classics forward, and Large Cents from Coronet Head forward. My major complaint with them relates to color.

IMO, many older holdered RB Unc. coins would be BN if holdered today. I'm also not happy with seeing coins with 85% RD in RD holders.

From my own small experience and from what I hear NGC has gotten tighter with copper over the past year or two. Combined with the guarantee maybe some of the accurately graded NGC copper will get more respect and spend less time in front of PCGS's crossover firing squad. I hope so. It will be a lot cheaper and less frustrating getting NGC copper recertified than going the crossover route.

As for NGC's lean period of grading copper, they'd be wise to buy back a few of the Indian cents out there. Easy for me to spend their money but some of them keep resurfacing and are bad publicity.
