Poll: What would you buy?

If you had $500 to spend what kind of gold coin would you buy? Edited: to add I didnt put all the gold coins up because you cant buy them for $500 or atleast not very easily. (I.E. $3 and $1 type 2)

Choice PCGS AU58 $1 Type 3 in a scarce/rare date. I have an 1872 that I got at just about that price. Total mintage around 3500, total PCGS certified 77 in all grades (in my 10/02 Pop report). A lot of the 1860s/1870s Philadelphia dates are extremely scarce, but IMO the prices don't reflect the scarcity. For instance, the 1875 is probably the best-known rarity among the Philadelphia Type 3s. Mintage around 400. Its PCGS certified pop. is 52 in all grades. Compare that to the 1872, which sells for about 10% as much in choice AU. The 1872 (and several others) look like bargains to me, assuming you can find one.

$10 Indian because I have never owned one, and I think they are one of the best looking gold coins out there.

  • I always loved the $20 Saint design. Sometime back, my Dad brought home a Saint bullion and I really wanted to get one. Unluckily I fell ill with a sore throat (you must all know!) so while my dad and I were downstairs making tea, I was actually telling him about getting a gold coin (you must all know what a shock that is when your dreams become reality!)!

  • Wow, this board sure does like Saints. I voted for $1 Type 3, a nice 62 or AU can be had in many dates for in some cases well under $500. A $2.5 indian would be my second choice.

I think a Saint should always be the first. It's beautiful, classic, and nearly an ounce of gold! From there you can get others. My first was a Saint, then a $5 lib, then a $10 lib. Then some cheapy 20 Francs roosters (back when gold was $260 image )
