I can't spam a sold coin, right? Images/description

Recently, we had the pleasure to handle the coin below. Hopefully, the description and images will give you a good feel for what it looked like. It was sold to a forum member, whose identity will remain a secret, unless he chooses to unmask himself.

"One of the prettiest and most appealing business strike Trade Dollars of any grade, that we have handled in a long time! The delicate pink central obverse gives way to a lovely blend of turquoise-green, rose, violet and russet along the border from 5:00 to 2:00. The reverse possesses a faint champagne patina and is exceptionally choice for the grade. Sharply struck and about as good as it gets for an MS64 of this scarce and under-appreciated type."

You forgot "fulsome" - don't you read the Heritage catalogs??

    So, what's wrong with it??

I've been wanting a nice Trade Dollar. This ones a beauty and I like it. Now if I'm right? Although a couple faint print lines are a fact of life sometimes, if those are prints on left obv field they would bother me. I take a coin in balance, but on a large coin if it's mottled from a print it would and does bother me.

I also understand a print will show more in an image than in person.

The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.

Attractively toned trade dollars are very difficult to find. As you know, I consider the design to be one of the best ever put out by the mint. A high end MS64 coin can be quite a beauty! And since there have been lonly about 100 MS65 or better coins certified, it can represent a lot of value as well!

Here's an interesting fact: A big chunk of all the superb gem trade dollars were found in a single group of 25 in a safe deposit box in Seattle! That's why the 1878-S comprises such a large percentage of the high grade pieces.

Replies (brief ones, for a change):

Russ, I could, but I wont - sorry. image

    nwcs - good one!

Lakesammman - I do and not much.

Clankeye - I'm surprised you like it - I didn't think it was mottled/speckled enough for you. image

stman - from my recollection, what you are seeing is not a print. If it is, it sure didn't bother me.

barberlover - even if you had seen it first, you couldn't have had it. Your wife told me you can only by Barber dimes, quarters and halves until further notice. image

TDN - thanks for the added information.

I actually don't think that there is a print on the obverse, it looks more like that type of whispy incomplete penetrance of toning that is seen on some coins. I have a few Washington quarters that don't have prints on them but that do have that broken toning pattern. As barberlover said previously, the coin has "the look".

It's not a big deal, but I'm seeing print on my monitor. TomB, I understand what you mean about the whispy toning, But I'm seeing actual print lines. So we agree to disagree?image

No problems about agreeing to disagree!image Anyway, I see what you are saying about what you think is a print. The reason I don't think it's a print is because there are no bifurcation points within the lines. A print will have bifurcation points everywhere.

TomB, I'll take your word for some reason.image But when I see those kind of wispy lines my guard goes up. I understand sometimes it can just be the toning and that's it. Like I mentioned earlier, I think the coin is a beauty.
