Are you like me...I like PLs and DMPLs but only when they are clean.

Are you like me...I like Morgans with PL and DMPL surfaces but only when they are fairly abrasion free. It seems that the abrasions really, really show up on these coins (because of the mirrored surfaces) and if it's less than a relatively clean 64, i'm turned off by the coin.

I rarely see what they call 65's these days in DMPL that I like.

  • I'm just like you. Eye appeal really suffers otherwise. Those marks dominate as the center of attention.

    I would agree......
DMPL's and PL's really show off the hits and chatter thus requiring a
very clean 64, 65 or 66 to satisfy my taste......which is why I don't have to
many of these.....image but they are beautiful when you find one!

PL and DMPL Morgans are my passion. I especially seek heavily cameoed coins, and I think that B&W cameo DMPL's are the very epitome and the holy grail of all numismatics without question. In fact, all other coins pale into insignificance by comparison. In fact, to take it a step further,,,,the only really important things in life are a good woman, fine cigars, a Harley, and heavy cameo DMPL dollars, everything else is just fluff.

So I guess what I'm saying is that I like PL and DMPL dollars somewhat.

  • I have a few 63-65 pl's and dmpl's and can say the chatter REALLY bothers me

now give me a nice 66 or 67 dmpl and I am a happy guy

That's right, I like them to look like a Modern Proof. That means BLAST WHITE snake. Well maybe just a little periph target tone but monster tone & monster DMPL just don't mix. I've had some first strikes DMPLs that were 63 from ticks but I was forgiving because of the outstanding frost and mirrors.
You're really slumming on the 64's snake. Nice surfaces on DMPLs don't start happening till 65 & 66.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I sure do like DMPL and PL, but when it comes to surfaces, I have to make some concessions since I can't afford to shell out the $$$ for a 65+ DMPL. Well, I can, but I can't justify it. But I may be getting a new job within a month or two. And if I do, then I'll likely get a 20-30% raise. So maybe then... image
  • Hi! I don't mind a few ticks or marks, but hairlines are really bothersome. Ditto on proofs Morgans. I have a handful of Morgans that I'm pretty sure are P/L or DMPL, but are heavily toned. My dilemma is that I really like the coins as-is (colorful), and to dip them would make them blast white, like so many others. I've put a few proof-likes away that are heavily toned, but I certainly know what you're getting at - you can't see the reflectivity if it is impeded by the toning.

I got a verbal opinion from ANACS once on a couple of them, and they confirmed the coins were PL or better. He suggested dipping them as well! I think for now, I'll keep them as is. If I get a chance, I'll post images!

    Thanks,

  • As a prooflike enthusiast I like coins to be as deep as possible, have as much contrast (cameo) as possible and be as clean as possible. Of course, finding a coin with all these attributes in full force may be next to impossible! However, I think that the main line of compromise is to not have a coin with either an unsightly major bagmark or any notable overabundance of ticks. For certain dates a compromise must be struck at some point as near visual perfection, or nearly so, may be almost impossible. If I find a coin that is exceptionally deep mirrored for that date I might tolerate some minor hits in places provided none is overly distracting and the coin is basically appealing for the date.

Here are some less than "65" DMPL examples which I find interesting and that I picked up over the years (the 1880-0 is headed for a regrade eventually as I think its the best I have ever seen and perhap a 65).

Most of the really deep mirrors have one of two problems, If the fields are clear, the

face is marked up. Conversely, if the face is clean then the fields look as if they held the

olympic Ice Skating finals on it. Very, very hard to find a high grade with both deep clean field

and a flawless face. Maybe I can find a coin doctor to inject Botox into the nicks and scrapes

to relax the lines a bid.

  • I love DMPL's.. on my Morgans and my women. 64 is the absolute cut off for a good looking DMPL 1Morgan. I have a couple 64's that are fairly nice, but even 65's are shakey at times. I agree that the 66 and up, god help my credit card, are the real beauts.

But that 68 dmpl 80-s.. . *shudder* It has some periphery toning, but I'll take it anyways. image

    Got Morgan?
  • I think it's a rare occurrence when you run into a PL or DMPL that has few or no distractions, and then you WILL be paying a pretty premium for them. As there is no grading standard for PL's and DMPL's separately, you do have to accept a minimal number of hits here and there depending on the quality of coin that you are willing to settle for, but for the most part, 66 and up are really the creme-de-la-creme where it comes to these coins. Personally I like coins that are relatively free of marks for the grade and which exhibit exceptional contrast. One of my favorites is this MS64DMPL - not perfect, but pretty good for the grade!
