  • Marty (or any other RPM buffs),
Have you got any info on the 1958/7? I picked one up at a local show this weekend.

    Thanks in advance!

Marty - I collect Lincoln cent RPMs, but I don't collect slabs - I don't like to pay the premium for a holder I'm just going to bust anyway. In fact, RPMs are a large part of my specialty, comprising of about half of my collection - roughly 800-900 pieces. If you have any that aren't in plastic I'd like to see a list.

Dwood - You have what I listed as 1960D-1MM-001, CONECA RPM#001. Its value in ChBU is around $10-12, and in GEM BU it sells for $20-25.

Dwood - the 1958/7 cent is a myth. It was listed by Breen, but that book and his listing system are far outdated - one of the major problems with following outdated guides. I'm not sure who was the first to disprove the existence of a 1958/7 cent, but I can tell you for sure that Ken Potter, John Wexler, Gary Wagnon, James Wiles, and myself all agree that the cause of what Breen reported to be the corner of a 7 under the 8 is actually a master die gouge. Most 1958 cents, both P and D mint, exhibit this anomaly to some degree...so even if all these people are wrong and it really is an overdate they aren't worth a premium because they are far too common. I have many rolls of them.

I don't generally collect RPM's but do actively collect Double Dies.

I wish I had known ahead of time, I could have sent you an MS63RD for a postage stamp and a dime.

I once ran a dutch auction on eBay for these things with 1,000 items, microscopic photos, and the full and complete unabridged story as to what they really are and what they are being sold as on eBay for $5-$10 a piece...I had 1,000 items with a starting bid of 1 cent each and 32 cents postage (at the time that's all it took). I received a whopping three bids in a month before discontinuing the educational giveaway. During that period of time, an ANACS 65 sold for $25, and a number of others sold for between $5 and $15 each. Sometimes you can't even GIVE the truth away.

Stewart - On the 1958, ixnay...I'd love it, though. From what I've gathered there are fewer than half a dozen known.

The best 69S DDO I've seen was at Jack Beymer's table at the ANA convention, Chicago, August 10, 1999. It was a purplish brown slabbed EF45 that looked like a good bodybag candidate. It had that brassy-oily look that Blue Ribbon puts on circulated copper if you don't do it right. Anywho, I believe it was an ANACS slab - if not that, NGC - I don't remember very well. It had the details of EF45, but I would have given it a downgrade due to loss of eye appeal from being monkeyed with. It was still a very positive experience, though....at least I've held one.

My best wish would be to photo a 1970S DDO#1 in red. I probably could never own one of them unless I found one, but I do have rather grainy microphotos of one of them in color...I'd like to improve on those shots and have the chance to study one of them in person. Rumor has it there are around a dozen of them known, only a couple of which are red.

  • I don't collect RPM's unless they are blatant and have a high coolness factor S/D's, bold RPMs. I do however collect Doubled dies and have nearly everyone listed in cherry pickers for the wheats plus some that are not listed. I also collect doubled dies for Jeffs and buffs as well. Although not official just yet, I may have a unique DDO and DDR Buff. Brian Ribar agrees and its currently in transit to John Bordner for a second oppinion. What really cool is that the coin is a high end UNC, 66 maybe 67.
