Seized Coin Collection on eBay

The 2/11 edition of Numismatic News had a small story mentioning that a coin collection seized by the Eastlake,OH police department is to be auctioned on eBay. I just took a look. Lots of late-date proof sets, state quarter rolls and raw, BU morgans. Some gold. If anyone is interested, here's a link:

Wow. Talk about going from zero to a couple of hundred feedbacks within a couple of weeks!
I wonder if anyone would leave them with a Negative?! image

  • It's a shame to see someone put so much effort into auction listings only to use less than detailed photos. I'm a firm believer that a coin gets more money if you show a nice detailed picture, regardless of the condition of the coin.
    I have icon envy.
  • That's a lot of coins. Sheesh. Where all of those auctions from one seize?

here is the funny part....would it be crazy if the whole thing was a bright scam thought up by a scam artist...think about it...pretend your a police dept...send a note to numismatic news and coin world....get a brand new id on ebay WITH SHADES AND NO FEEDBACK....run hundreds of auctions and get paid and then VANISH...oh well overactive imagination running wild!!!!

you know...I really thought it might be a scam but I did google the Eastlake and came upon the web site..the phone number matches and I did call to confirm...so I guess its real....but what a great scam if it were fake..... hey wait a second....I could put up a web site with a fake town and staff someone on a phone to say East Lake Police Dept...maybe the whole thing is a scam....hmmm who would the last laugh be upon....

  • Jon,
I don't know what number you called or any other details...but, as a lifelong Buckeye, I will tell you that Eastlake, OH. is a for real town near Cleveland.image

...staff someone on a phone to say East Lake Police Dept...

Impersonating a police officer raises the stakes a bit.

Also, a great scheme but while the authorities largely look the other way on petty internet fraud, I have a feeling this would get there attention.

It would be interesting to know under what circumstances the coins were seized er I mean forfeitted. Its hard to imagine they would be used in a crime unless they just happened to be in a house at the same time as some drugs were.

    BAJJERFAN,

I wondered the same thing. Neither the auctions or the article said exactly.

  • They could have been seized as "ill gotten gains" of a drug operation. They buy diamonds, why not coins?

  • I don't live too far from Eastlake and I know nothing about a bust etc. Hopefully keets will see this thread as I believe he said he sometimes attends the Eastlake Coin Club meetings.
  • I read about this a week ago in the newspaper here in Central Illinois. The article indicated the coins would be offered on E-Bay.

If it goes like the State of PA auctions, they will bring stupid money for the coins being offered.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • I went and viewed the collection. Apparently, this collection was seized from a bookie. I believe some came from the US Mint and most of the others were bought from the Coin Vault on TV.

Oh the irony! The coin vault! How did the gold double eagles look?
  • I would say AU is generous but might make it.

Thanks, Todd! I'm glad I didn't bid. I can do better elsewhere. image

I am a bit surprised, but there are no particularly good deals there. The photos are terrible--buying anything non-slabbed or otherwise prepackaged would be perilous. The few gold offerings are weak.
