    Ugly. Because it's not red.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • It would look better all brown.

  • Hey its a 72. That's the most difficult of all IHCs to find nice. I personally don't find the speckling attractive, but at least it appears evenly distributed over the coin. That is an expensive coin. Is it yours? Is it graded?
  • I know nothing about the coin..

But just the picture looks busy to me and I have a hard time seeing the details. Show me the 67rd one again so I know what to look at. image

That coin does not exhibit speckled OR mottled toning. As a matter of fact, that coin exhibits no toning at all. What I see is a problem with the alloy mixture. I do not really care for speckled or mottled toning, but I find this coin somewhat attractive. I wouldn't snub my nose at it!

    Flash:

Thanks - it's not speckled or mottled - just wanted to see if someone would fall in the "trap"image

It actually looks red at most angles but has a RB look at others....very hard to photograph correctly.

I like it a lot, a very nice strike too! It will be just a bit too pricey for me. Indian cents are way cool, better than any post 1950 coin I own.

  • Lake Sammman,
I sent a photo of your coin to the conservation firm of Specks and Mottling. This was their reply:

    Dear Sir,
Your coin is an abomination. No amount of speckling or mottling will help. It is singularly unattractive. The Clint Howard of coins. Thank you for considering Specks and Mottling.

Don't despair though, I know a guy who takes coins and shrinks them. He may be interested in helping you out. image

"The Clint Howard of Coins" That's got to be the single worst thing I've ever heard anything or anyone called.

Mint State Indian cents don't become speckled or mottled. Some dates in the 1866-1877 years develop wood grain toning because of the alloy mixture. It also happens frequently with the 1909 Lincoln cents.
The only time you will see speckled or mottled toning on a mint state copper coin is when chemicals have been put on the surface.
