It seems lately, we can't even enjoy this hobby

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
It's either AT this or doctored that. Yes we need to be on guard, but I've seen lately even the seasoned collectors feel there is something wrong with every coin they see. If we can't enjoy this hobby just a little and every coin we see think there is something wrong with it then IMO it's time to move on.

I myself choose to be on guard but still enjoy the hobby. Hey I've really never looked at the glass of water half full.image

I agree, I buy a coin because I like the way it looks. I don't like the wild toned Morgan's but I love the colorful Jefferson's. I don't think I need to worry about AT as all of my proof Jefferson's came out of flat packs. If someone pays stupid money for an AT Morgan, then I think it's their problem.

  • I've enjoyed this hobby for many years. Heck, I even enjoy the Registry. I posted pictures of all my coins to share with everyone else. Some people are going to think that they are crap, others will think they're cool. I just collect what I like and leave the rest.

The cool thing about these boards is that there are a number of Barber collectors. Where else would I be able to find people with THAT same interest? This makes the hobby even more enjoyable for me.
  • Gotta agree with both Russ and MadMarty on this one - I'm in this hobby because I enjoy it. I buy the coins that I buy and pay the money that I pay because I want the coin - not anyone else's approval.

If someone wants to spend a fortune on a very colorful coin - more power to them (I don't have a fortune so you won't be seeing me in that group anytime soon image ). Personally, I have seen very few toned coins that grab my attention and scream BUY ME and that's not because of the money involved, I'm just not big on color.

I guess the bottom line is - collect what you want to collect and forget about public opinion. After all, the coins are not going into thier sets - the coins will be in your set and you are the one that get's to be pleased with them!

    Luxury.

When I was a kid, our father made us run ten miles a day, ring out our dripping wet T-shirts into a bucket, and satisfy our thirst from there. Times were hard, I tell you.

    I agree stman!
I've been looking at my coins and I think every one of them are AT, dipped or altered.
Let's go over to Yahoo and sign up for a sewing & knitting group.
Like Russ, I too don't have a glass. I drink out of the mud puddle @ the end of my road by the mailbox.

I am actually enjoying it more the older I get. Problem coins are both good and bad. For the good part, it makes it a challenge to avoid the pitfalls and see if you can actually get nice, problem free coins.

Hmmm.. which is less enjoyable? Watching the threads about doctored coins, or finding out down the road your coin is worth 20% of what you paid for it because it is doctored. Something to think about.

Dang Dog you don't give me much to go on with that image, and besides I said I want to enjoy the hobby and not knock coins but since you ask............ I don't know what's going on on obv right field, looks like print lines or something scraped, looks like a couple staple scratches also in the field. A couple lines going down Liberty's face and maybe smeared behind her head.

Rev, Not sure what that mottled mess is and also maybe print lines. Hey, nice coin nice catch ohhh ahhhh.

Well don't think you have it sold to me and it isn't something I'd send you PayPal right away.image

I'm enjoying the hobby more than ever - the key is to keep things in perspective. I've purchased many fine coins since 1-1-03 and am in the hunt for more of the same.

What I find discouraging is, there are some great educational threads that get ignored. Then, there are the AT threads that rehash the same issues and every one piles on. I'm not sure myself what's so interesting about them. I don't really care if a $19 Morgan is AT - who cares?? But it's human nature to pile on, I guess.

  • I am enjoying the hobby more than ever. Because now I have goals and plan stuff out instead of inpulse buying.

sure you can....its just when you see something that is wrong be it altered, or, a.t. one should speak up so someone else doesnt get ripped off...........the reason you are hearing so much about it, is because there are so mamy altered and at coins out there.image

I have to agree with what Lakesammman said. There are some good threads here that wind up getting buried amongst the other chatter. I have been sticking mainly on the Darkside (World/Ancient forum), though lately I have been trying to read some of the Liteside threads.

I still enjoy the hobby quite a bit. For me, I just stick to what I like and can afford. Everything seems to work out nicely when I do that. BTW, I did enjoy the one thread with all of the high-grade Barber coins. I'll never be able to afford them in that condition, but I still do love the series and will get by on my circulated issues image.

    Dog97,

This is a bit off topic, but with your canine insight I thought perhaps you could answer a longstanding question I've had.

Why was it always that my hound seemed to prefer drinking out of a pool of putrid water than out of his water bowl?image

    GSAGUY

P.S. For the record, and to stay on topic, I need only pull out a few of my favorite coins to make all in the world seem right.

About 19 years ago Eureka Trading Andy told me something at a Cherry Hill, NJ coin show that has stuck with me ever since. We were having beers together at the bar after the show, in what was a tough market at the time, when he told me in a conversation that I should look for the good in every coin. Granted, it is sometimes is hard to find that good, except that it could always be spent for food or pay the bills.
But I have utilized that advice while grading, buying and pricing coins ever since. Perhaps that advice should be used on the doctored or dipped coins, as many of these coins are exceptional coins despite the external forces that have been brought upon their delicate surfaces.

With the coins we have been seeing lately it's hard to find any good at all in them, John.
