It seems lately, we can't even enjoy this hobby

It's either AT this or doctored that. Yes we need to be on guard, but I've seen lately even the seasoned collectors feel there is something wrong with every coin they see. If we can't enjoy this hobby just a little and every coin we see think there is something wrong with it then IMO it's time to move on.
I myself choose to be on guard but still enjoy the hobby. Hey I've really never looked at the glass of water half full.

You can afford a glass? I have to drink from the hose. BTW, personally, I'm having a blast with this hobby!

The cool thing about these boards is that there are a number of Barber collectors. Where else would I be able to find people with THAT same interest? This makes the hobby even more enjoyable for me.
If someone wants to spend a fortune on a very colorful coin - more power to them (I don't have a fortune so you won't be seeing me in that group anytime soon
I guess the bottom line is - collect what you want to collect and forget about public opinion. After all, the coins are not going into thier sets - the coins will be in your set and you are the one that get's to be pleased with them!

What kind of potato you got there? Looks like it's been harshly cleaned, and has engraved details!!!!

Luxury.
When I was a kid, our father made us run ten miles a day, ring out our dripping wet T-shirts into a bucket, and satisfy our thirst from there. Times were hard, I tell you.
Coin collecting is fun. You guys are harshing my buzz.

I've been looking at my coins and I think every one of them are AT, dipped or altered.
Let's go over to Yahoo and sign up for a sewing & knitting group.
Like Russ, I too don't have a glass. I drink out of the mud puddle @ the end of my road by the mailbox.

<< <i>Oh yeah stman, since you asked for one, here's one of my original Barbers for you too try to shoot down. >>
Dang Dog you don't give me much to go on with that image, and besides I said I want to enjoy the hobby and not knock coins but since you ask............ I don't know what's going on on obv right field, looks like print lines or something scraped, looks like a couple staple scratches also in the field. A couple lines going down Liberty's face and maybe smeared behind her head.
Rev, Not sure what that mottled mess is and also maybe print lines. Hey, nice coin nice catch ohhh ahhhh.
Well don't think you have it sold to me and it isn't something I'd send you PayPal right away.
What I find discouraging is, there are some great educational threads that get ignored. Then, there are the AT threads that rehash the same issues and every one piles on. I'm not sure myself what's so interesting about them. I don't really care if a $19 Morgan is AT - who cares?? But it's human nature to pile on, I guess.

<< <i>That's why I don't try the registry game or post pictures of "paigow_johnny's crappy Morgan collection". I don't need the ridicule...
I'd love to see regular circulated Morgans from members' collections. Seriously.
You Barber boys aren't playing fair. How can we pee in your cornflakes if you put up nice coins.
and it sets us apart from practitioners and consultants. Gregor
I still enjoy the hobby quite a bit. For me, I just stick to what I like and can afford. Everything seems to work out nicely when I do that. BTW, I did enjoy the one thread with all of the high-grade Barber coins. I'll never be able to afford them in that condition, but I still do love the series and will get by on my circulated issues

This is a bit off topic, but with your canine insight I thought perhaps you could answer a longstanding question I've had.
Why was it always that my hound seemed to prefer drinking out of a pool of putrid water than out of his water bowl?

P.S. For the record, and to stay on topic, I need only pull out a few of my favorite coins to make all in the world seem right.

About 19 years ago Eureka Trading Andy told me something at a Cherry Hill, NJ coin show that has stuck with me ever since. We were having beers together at the bar after the show, in what was a tough market at the time, when he told me in a conversation that I should look for the good in every coin. Granted, it is sometimes is hard to find that good, except that it could always be spent for food or pay the bills.
But I have utilized that advice while grading, buying and pricing coins ever since. Perhaps that advice should be used on the doctored or dipped coins, as many of these coins are exceptional coins despite the external forces that have been brought upon their delicate surfaces.
