1960 Small/Large Date Lincoln

I thought I came across a good link here a few weeks ago but can't find it now. Does anyone have a link to the difference between the small and large 1960 Lincoln's? Pictures to compare the two would be great. Information on the Denver strikes would also be helpful.

Thanks,
Dave

Here are two pictures of a little set that I bought a couple weeks ago. "Temp2" compares the large and small date 1960-D cent. "Temp" shows all 4 coins.

It now appears that the 1960-D small date is more common than the 1960-D large date in Mint State. At the moment the bid for the small date coin is slightly lower. The 1960 small date Philadelphia coin continues to be the most expensive of the 4 coins.

Opps! The four coin picture won't upload - sorry.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

  • Kranky - thanks for posting those pics. They are the best I've seen for these diagnostics. Printing now...

  • Thanks Bill and Cranky.

Cranky, that was actually the site I was at the other day. I decided to book mark it this time. I can see a slight difference in the dates but for some reason I cannot differentiate the difference. Instead of looking at it through a loupe, I'm going to scan the coins to a larger size and see if that will help. I probably only have the large dates but... hey ya never know.

    Thanks Again,
    Dave

It's a funny thing about varieties sometimes. I can spot the difference on 1960 and 1982 LD/SD cents instantly. But on other varieties I have to painstakingly compare to photos for quite a while. I guess it's just the way different peoples' brains work.

The way I learned how to tell the difference on the 1960 is to look at the top of the 6 to see if it "reaches up and over" enough to be even vertically with the right side of the base of the 6. You could look at it a different way - does the bottom part of the 6 (the "loop" where the right side of the 6 curls up) account for half of the height of the 6 (large date), or does it account for 75% of the height of the 6 (small date).

On the 1982, I look to see if there is almost enough room between the 2 and the rim for another 2 to fit. There isn't really enough space for another 2, but to my eyes it's either "maybe it would fit" (small date) or "not a chance" (large date).

It might be easier to learn how to tell without ANY loupe. In fact, upon rereading this post, it might be easier to ignore everything I've written. I'm not sure it even makes sense! image
