Bust Dollar with a great pedigree

I bought a terrific Bust Dollar from my friends at Legend this week. The coin has great original tone, nice luster, a strong strike, no adjustment marks, just about everything you look for in an AU bust dollar. The big surprise happened today while I was doing a little research on Bust dollars. I came across an original auction catalog for the Walter Childs auction held by Bowers and Merena back in aug. of 99, and I noticed one of the bust dollars on the cover had almost identical toning to my coin. After examining the coin and the picture I am 100% sure this is the same coin. It has a very distinct tone pattern. Somehow over the past few years it must have lost its Pedigree on the PCGS holder, but there is no doubt its a Childs coin. I'll have to get that Pedigree put back on the holder now.
It was great coin to begin with, now it just has a nice little added bonus! Thanks Laura & George, for a great coin as always!

I would love to but my digital camera is at my office in the city. I would need a snow mobile to get there tonight! About 2 feet of snow here in NJ. I will do a follow up post when I can get some pics of it.

It is an 1800 PCGS AU 50. The only picture of the coin is on the cover ( right next to the 1804, to the left). The lot # is 453 ( no picture there). I might add that it was sold raw at EF-45, but there is no doubt, imo, that it belongs in the au50 holder. Legend never had it on their site.

Nice pick! I just checked my notes, and I really liked the coin. The hammer price then was $2.8K, which was probably what scared me off. Bid for AU50 then was about $3K. Of course, if I knew then what I know now...

Thats pretty cool that you still have the catalog with your notes written on it. Yeah, its a great coin and would have been a great buy even at 3K!!!

I save the vast majority of my catalogs. I just remembered that the late John Haugh warned me before that that prices for ED's would go up. I didn't believe him. That wasn't my first mistake, and it certainly wasn't my last either!
