Need help to identify what's up with this Walker

I don't run into many error coins but this one caught my eye.

At first I thought it was struck-thru or a die clash but the raised metal makes me think it is something else? Rotated die? Lamination, Exploded die? Im not sure at all. Any error folks out there that could help?

  • I can't get the links to work. Don't know if it's my end or yours. image
  • Can't help you but that looks really neat.
  • Hmm, interesting ... not sure, guess flaking on planchet ??

  • It looks like a die chip error, where a piece of the die flaked off, thus leaving an indentation in the die itself, which was then filled by the coin as it was being struck.

I think it looks like a planchet flaw. Does the met look like it is lifting at all? It is hard to tell by the photos. The only other thing I can see it could be is a die clash, but that just doesn't seem to be it.

  • Very cool, I agree with Frank on what it is. Very interesting conversation piece.

  • Both the part that tails off the flag and the small area inside the rays are raised up and it looks to be the planchet filled some void there. So far the chip die seems to fit the best. I know it would help if the coin wasn't so worn. On the other hand I was surprised to see so much detail of it left on such a well circulated piece.

I don't have my tripod handy so I had to take the pics freehand.

Does anyone have a full picture of a Walker half reverse? Try to compare some details of the reverse with the detail on the obverse.

I had the same thing happen when I could not figure out what was wrong with my 1999 D SBA. It ended up being a Clash Die Error.

That was a very nice gesture on your part to post that photo. Don't know why those links weren't working for me. Based on what I can see I would have to agree with the others. Thanks again. image
  • That is, that it's a chip, although SemperFi makes an interesting comment. There was a thread awhile back where someone was able to do a photo comparison and show (highlight) and match up the reverse to the obverse and show the outline of the clash. If that could be done here it could possibly prove or disprove whether it's a die clash. image
  • Here's a reverse as it would look if there was severe die clashing on the obverse. IMO, your coin is a nice die clashed specimen. Note between the sun rays the letters Uand S inverted. Nice catch!

  • Now it's my turn. I couldn't get the link to work.image

The reverse doesn't seem to show any of the normal tells for a die clash. The only thing I see on the reverse is some some weakness near the rim and the letters above the eagle. This may be the die giving away here also but I don't see any sign of clashing on the revese.

When I find what I did with my camera stand I will try to take a better pic or or two and include the revese.

    Thanks,

    Dabigkahuna-
Good eye! What you have is a die clash. The raised areas in the sun rays are designs from the eagles right wing, specfically the second row of feathers under the "A" in AMERICA.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

agreed, die-clash. much more common on the smaller denom's, but not unheard of on halves & dollars.
