Fun with Proof Eagles

Folks,

Just a plain old coin thread here...

Just thought I'd share some of my most recent efforts in photography of proofs image

  • wow! I love it. You really captured the deep black mirrored fields look.

The date on the obverse looks a little screwy though. Are you using some sort of wide angle lens?
  • I use the standard lens of my Nikon CP 800. Sometimes, it can't focus just right on proofs, especially numbers and letters. The fun thing was that my little spot lamp actually added the nice white half-moon at the top of the mages, giving them that nice contrast on the fields.

i have a hard time doing mirror proofs without being able to read "GE REVEAL" backwards on the coin itself. the lighting is tricky to get a good shot. nice shot ursabear.

I still use the old fashion scanner, and I'm not to good at that myself

  • Pretty nice Ursa - I've noticed with proofs that if the room is dark except for your light sources, you can play around with the shadows until you get a perfectly black field and then the coin looks reall cool!

i find my scanner to be generally better (especially mirror proofs), but the camera's much better for color and tone.

  • :-)

The reveal bulbs do help - as do the darker room. All good suggestions. Now if I can just get my camer to focus better, it'd be a PR70! image
  • That is a gorgeous coin. I wish they would do somthing a little more artistic to the Reverse of those things. The Obverse is just Beautiful!

I agree on the eagle on the reverse. One of the old traditional design eagles would be cool. Maybe even a variation on the Sacagawea eagle or the eagles on the Peace dollar and $5 gold indians...

  • Thank you, all (and Russ, too). Those are pretty high compliments.

I've got a couple of Washingtons in my collection pieces I might throw on the boards tonight... Some fun!
