1878 7tf Variety MORE Help Please

On the 15th I finally got on the board and posted my first message. Everyone here was so nice. It is great to find a forum for collecting where people are willing to share information.

What I have is an 1878 7tf Morgan with Deep Mirrors (12" plus) and highly frosted devices. I posted some pics and several people responded with their opinions and things like doubling in different areas, which I checked.

I am attaching several micro-photos of the coin areas taken at 60X. If anyone can give me more information about this variety I would greatly appreciate it since all the research I have done does not indicate to me any of the varieties I would anticipate or what has been suggested.

Thank you for you help.

    Coingirl,

The only significant varieties for 1878 are 8 tailfeather varieties, 7 fea hubbed over 8 fea, and B1 (long arrow nock) reverses. There are some of the 7/8 fea reverses that don't really show underlying feathers, but they are somewhat easily attributed. Otherwise the 1878 varieties number over one hundred and are not significant. Some are so similar as to defy positive attribution. You have posted an impressive list of images, but, none show any diagnostic of a significant variety; in other words, it is a relatively common coin. Are you looking for something specific or ado you just want to know what particular die pair this coin was struck from? If your request is simply for attribution, I'll spend the time and TRY to narrow it down for you. If you are wondering if it is a variety worthy of a premium, it isn't.

Send it to ANACS, pay the extra $5 to have it attributed and it's done. Let them do the work for you, quite a deal for 5 extra bucks!!!
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Like Gilbert said, there are over 100 different varieties of the 1878 Morgan dollar, and I find some of these fascinating. It appears from the reading that I've done in the VAM Book (Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace dollars) that many changes occurred in the first year as a reaction to public opinion, and observations and recommendations by the director of the mint and several other influential people at the time. The result is a fascinating number of variants. Your piece appears to be in excellent shape and I would encourage you to find a copy of the VAM book and read up on the 1878 issue. It could verywell be that you have a treasure in your collection!.

    Regards,

    Frank
