Solicitation of Artificial Toning Examples

I am looking to do an informational section on my website about artificial toning. My idea is to provide an overview of toning and photo examples of artificial toning. I am not on a witch hunt, I am not about to create a Coin Doctor's Cookbook, and I am not expecting to create a definitive guide. My goal is to provide some information on toning...both natural and artificial.

With all of the discussions here, I suspect that some people (such as myself) have experimented with some things at one time or another in order to gain a little more first hand knowledge of what AT looks like. With that in mind, I am interested in any pictures that anyone may have of their experiments.

I am not looking to scour Ebay for suspected AT coins. I am looking for absolutely AT coin done by individuals. I will need to know a little about how it was done so I can tailor the information to the website. If you choose to remain anonymous, that is fine with me. I just need to know that you did the ATing. The reason being that I want to know for sure that it is AT and not something found on Ebay, etc.

Some people here know me and can probably vouche for me in one way or another. They know I am a loudmouth image but I would hope that they also know I try to do nothing but good for the hobby.

Anohter thing I would like to solicit is comments on AT and natural toning. I will be looking at various prior posts and will glean information from those as well as the web. I would say my toning knowledge is pretty basic (I can spot easy stuff but don't know all of the ins and outs) but I am a quick learner and I eat this stuff up when I do something like this for the site.

So if you have something to share with me, PM me or email me or post here. Whatever is more comfortable for you.

Thanks.

What's your email? It's really a hassle to upload them here.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I sent you 2 email. The coins were heated with a propane torch. The silver dime turned out the best on the rev, it almost looks real but you can see the white spot where I held it with an alligator clip while I torched it. The dark spot on the rev of one of the nickels is the same thing. The heat was applied really fast, that's why the alligator clip area didn't have time to heat & tone. The evenly toned ones had the heat applied more slowly & evenly. The quarters have to be heated very slowly or they turn black instead or blue. You pass the torch lightly across the coin and it turns a little color. Pass the torch again and it turns darker. Or heat it from one edge only and the color moves across in a "rainbow" pattern.
That's about the extent of my ATing that I can document with pictures. Sorry it's not more exciting.
You can post them here if you like.

  • Thanks guys.

Russ, that is a great example of AT to the maximum. Great to show how a coin just doesn't look right and throws up red flags everywhere.

Dog, yours are a different story. Discouting the fact that they are clad/nickel (which doesn't typically seem to tone like that, although it can) and that they are really too recent to be naturally toned, they are more deceptive. From what I have read in various places, it seems that one needs to know what is normal for a type as well as what looks ok in general. Good examples of that.

    Thanks for the examples.
