Does anyone prefer to collect only large sized coins?

To some, larger sized coins are more desirable. Do you derive more pleasure from collecting big coins like silver dollars and half dollars than from collecting small coins like half dimes and dimes? The smallest coins that I’ve seen are the California Fractional Gold pieces. I can see why it might not be as fun to collect them as it would be to collect big $20 Liberties.

What’s your opinion?

Yes large coins give me great satisfaction over smaller coins. I like large Gold coins.

It's well accepted that the market generally doesn't like very small coins. I don't mind, I'm into gold dollars, and they are relatively affordable even with mintages from 1,600 to 20,000. Those few with mintages into the hundreds of thousands or millions are even cheaper. My guess is that the small coins' relative unpopularity won't change.

  • The other day I was thinking about how popular the three cent silver coin would be if it were at least the size of a nickel! Such a cool design, but too small for most.
  • I dont care. I do like heavy gold coins a bit more than some smaller ones but that is just because I like holding lots of gold not because I like the coin better.

  • I wonder if there’s data regarding how long it takes dealers to sell a coin vs. its size. Do large coins sell faster? And how about price appreciation? Do large coins retain their value better? Do they increase in value faster? What are the different types of size bias that we are dealing with?

I like biguns. Morgans. I can still see them with my old eyes. Funny, I liked them back in my young days when my eyes were good.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I love to collect Wlaking Libertys. They are large but at teh same time not so large.

All coins are very cool, but for the size, I love the half dollar. Silver dollars are just too big and bulky, quarters are a bit too puny. Halves are the perfect blend.

  • I probably lean more towards large coins. Ie; halves and dollars. But with a large coin they are truly spectacular when very nice, but they are hard to find I think that have less distracting marks as opposed to smaller coins. I think a flaw shows more on a large coin. But while large coins provide that wow factor, I love the detail on smaller coins.

I have noticed in the past several years that a lot of newer collectors like big coins, Halves and Dollars. I have introduced a lot of new collectors in to the coin arena who buy lower priced stuff around the 5.00 to 25.00 range, they all seemed to be intised by big stuff rather than the small.

  • one coin that is not big in size but big in fans is the Buffalo Nickel

I prefer the larger coins. Smaller than an eagle or half dollar, it is hard for me to get excited. I cannot believe that peopel actually collect those gold dollars--they are tiny!
