Buffalo Experts, What do you think about this 1918/7D?

I have been looking at this coin and wondering if is worth the dealer $1425 asking price. I just received these improved pictures from the dealer. The coin really has a sharp overdate and I think it might be a F12 grade. However, I also think the coin may be porus and may have been cleaned. Any opinions and advice on the coin would be appreciated.

Thanks, Charlie

Here's another coin I found, 1918/7-D NGCf12. To me this coin doesn't look as good as the other raw coin, but this one has smoother surfaces.

    Did I miss the pic?

I looked at a vf some time ago and I remember it was big bucks.

Sorry about having to edit to get the pictures, I seem to always have trouble getting them attached.

    Strictly my opinion.

If you have the $$$ for it, get it. I have been haunted several times since for not picking up the one I was looking at. I can probably still get it from the dealer, but I'm sure the price has gone up substantially. It looks very nice to me. I don't think I would call it porous, I think it's just that the buffs were such a "rough hewn" looking coin that you see the surface character of that coin.
  • Mooser, Impossible to tell definitivly from the scan but the obverse looks like some corrosion was cleaned off of it. Porosity doesn't always show up in a scan, but if the coin is porous I wouldn't pay $1450 for it.

Tough to tell from the scan. I am inclined to agree with you though. The obverse looks a bit "rough". I wouldn't give it the old + sign above fine/12 either. You could ask the dealer to give you a return privelage as long as the coin slabs, problem free and authentic. Not many dealers will give you a grade guarantee, I wouldn't even ask for that.
If the coin slabs problem free and authentic, everyone is happy. I would imagine you may have to send the coin in some kind of express service though. Let us know what you decide.

*Oh yeah, what did the dealer say about the surfaces?

The obverse does look a little rough but as others have pointed out it is tough to tell from a scan.

In addition, I would grade this coin VG-10+ even thogh it may slab as F-12 but it is not a full Fine IMO. (LIBERTY not nice enough and needs a little more HORN)

    Good luck whatever you decide.

I don't care for either of the coins you posted. The reverse on the raw one looks way to shiny. I would guess a VG10 at best.

The NGC one looks like a VG at best. maybe it's the lighting on that one but it looks to have more wear than the raw one.

I'd wait and find a nicer one slabbed.

Thanks for your inputs, I think I will keep looking and try to find a slabbed coin.
