Washington Quarter Question, a small update

stmanstman Posts: 11,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was at a show today, and seen a beautiful 34D toned Washington Quarter in ngc ms65. I don't collect these but it had a nice "look" to it. I understand this might be a better date, but I have to admit one of the reasons I passed on it is because it was in a NGC holder.

Usually, it doesn't matter what holder a coin is in and I always buy the coin. I was also advised by another dealer that he looks at coins like I do, but I might get buried in this coin forever. And usually that wouldn't bother me if I love a coin. I passed on it.

Any thoughts on this? I guess another reason I passed was because I don't know the series, and still have quick access to it if I changed my mind. It was a beauty, I'm still thinking about it.image

  • 34-d's don't come tones nice too often (w/ colors). Nice orig pieces, accurately graded MS65 either PCGS or NGC are tough coins.

Thanks, I do understand in 65 they get tough, and when I seen the toning I knew it probably is even a tougher coin. Price wasn't too bad either. Probably 30% over grey sheet.

Edit to add....... the toning was indeed nice colors.

I've never seen a toned 34D I liked, and even toned ones I didn't like were few and far between. Just a couple thoughts, since I can't see this coin (yet), I would avoid it if it's a dark coin and buy it if it's anywhere near the quality you would normally buy.

Thanks Strat, I don't feel it was a dark coin at all. For sure original, with kind of a light purple and I forget the rest. So are you saying you think I normally buy good quality? Of course the ones from you were good quality, but you've seen a few others of mine.

stman, you are going to get buried in a coin regardless of the slab if you over pay for it and/or you need to sell it quickly. I purchase a lot of toned washingtons in the three major holders. Unless they are high grade registry coins then there should be little risk in the price. If the toning is remarkable then the price risk is also negligible between the two holders. There are many bargains out there in NGC quarters. I'be been watching some registry quality washingtons sit at dealers sites for almost a year now slabbed PCGS and priced 8 times the same grade as an NGC coin. Tell me who is buried?

I went and looked at this quarter again. Turns out the seller has 3 of them. One more NGC and one PCGS old rattle holder. Well I can say buy the coin and not the holder is always the way to go. I was a little shy of the ngc toned one, looked at the other ngc white with some speckled toning and didn't like it. Looked at the PCGS one and it looked like someone took a chisel to George's face and it was graded 65 as well.

So the best one of the three is the one I saw at the show. It is kind of blue and gold, I feel it's envelope toned and pretty clean compared to the other two I looked at. I will probably pick it up at LB, if still available.

Washington folks, is this a good date to pick up with nice toning? I also wouldn't mind one white with nice original skin. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
