Nice original toned Frankie..........Grade Posted

When I bought this Frankie I thought it had a warm original look to it but the more I see it the less I like it. The dark toning does have a champagne tint if held at an angle that does not show in the scan.

So I ask......

Is this an attractive nice original toned Frankie?.....or just Butt Ugly?

It resides in a NGC Slab......Guess the Grade.( I'll post the grade at Midnight)

  • MS-65 and I will say its not butt ugly but not really attractive. To me its pretty much neutral. Edited because I forgot about the weak strike on this coin.

  • Nice coin. It's a typically struck 1953 coin, with unfortunately, typical toning for the year. For some reason 53P's usually have this kind of greyish mottled toning, which is actually not as pronounced in real life as in the picture I'm sure. The strike is extremely soft, as witnessed by the lack of hair detail on the obverse and very little bell line or eagle wing detail on the reverse. The piece is very clean, which leads me to believe it came from a mint set, so I'll give it an MS64, only because the strike is too soft to warrant higher, and the toning doesn't help it. Good coin!

Both of you are right on. NGC agrees with the Kid at MS65. But I agree with FC57coin that the coin only deserves a 64 for the exact reasons he mentioned.

  • image Hey Fatman! The Franklins hardly ever tone real nice and when they do Lucy Bop or Rick T buy them all up! I like the coin because it is all original and it probably has good luster in person. It looks very clean but with a typical strike.

  • I'm not surprised at the grade, though this is the reason why NGC sometimes gives you the heebygeebies where it comes to MS65 halves. An MS65 half should be a gem and representative of a well struck and well presented coin. I'm sure, as I said that the coin looks much better in person, and I'm sure it's a very nice coin, and since MS65 money isn't nearly what MS65FBL money is, your risk on a piece like this is marginal - enjoy it! image
