Is it ok to ask a seller to end an auction early?

I saw an AH kennedy on e-bay the other night and offered a very genurous offer. When the seller e-mailed me back they said they don't do that because they could get kicked off of e-bay and they also said they forwarded the e-mail i sent to e-bay so e-bay finds out what i'm doing. They also said they hope i get NARU'd. I always thought it was ok to ask a seller to end an auction early if there were no bids am i mistaken?

  • I will end auctions early and encourage offers before the end of the auction. the only way ebay finds out if some asswipe says something, what a butthead

You may ask almost anything. It's up to the Seller to respond favorably to your request or not.

This seller is either a newb, or hasn't read the rules. It's perfectly acceptable to close an auction early. It just isn't acceptable for the seller to solicit a sale outside of eBay. You have nothing to worry about.

When I saw an attractive 1917 T1 SLQ in MS64FH for sale, it was near $300 with days left. I contacted the seller and offered $420. They took it, and ended early. I'm glad, as I was willing to pay more and the auction likely would have gone higher for this attractive coin.

  • Instead of asking them if they'll end the auction early for me, I just ask if they'd end the auction if they got the right offer on the coin.

Most will write back and say either, sorry, it'll run its course, or yes, I'd consider ending early if I got $XXX for the coin. At least that way you know if the coin will be there during the last few seconds of the auction or if they'd sell it outright. And if they'd consider selling it outright, you want to be in that position.

  • Good idea GSAguy, i'll remember that next time i ask someone.
  • I have talked with a new seller that was threatend by eBay for ending ebay auction's early, with no proof he was selling the coin's off the system.
We end them all day long with offers via a phone call or email. We would much rather sell to a collector at a cheaper price then pay eBay an end of auction fee.
And yes we are on lifetime probation with eBay! But then our average monthly bill on eBay is $9K so that has a little pullimage

I get offers all the time. If a coin doesn't have a bid, I'll listen. If the coin has a bid, I'll inform the emailer that I'll let the auction run it's course. I will admit, most times the offers are borderline ridiculous......"bluesheet is x, and greysheet is x, will you accept y?". Most times I pay more for the coin than the offer image

So, is it not okay to ask? I've never gotten an email back saying it was against the rules. I've been turned down by some, bought some and been offered outrageous prices on some.

Just the other day, I emailed a seller asking them what their reserve was on a coin. The seller emailed me back and told me what it was and offered to sell the coin to me at that price. I said yes and bought it.
I think that you are dealing with a dirtbag seller for reporting you. Please let us know who it is , so that I can add him to my dirt list.
