Fun times at the Pelham, Alabama coin show

Well - my first day on the other side of the table was a blast. Not only were there some fellow board members at the show (Dahlonega, fivecents, hookoekoo, and dwood) but there was a pretty good crowd as well. Business was brisk, both dealer to dealer and with a lot of collectors around. A lot of interest in Morgans, gold and moderns was very apparent. I was surprised too that there weren't as many people bringing coins in to sell as I thought there might be, but I may be wrong. In all I had a blast - Dahlonega showed me some AWESOME coins, including the finest known 1861-D (Confederate) Dollar - as well as several other very unique, beautiful and rare gold pieces. One nice thing about the whole experience was being able to chat with dealers and deal on a more informal basis. I did buy a couple of very nice GSA Morgans and sold quite a number of coins, so all in all very rewarding - I'll be going back tomorrow so more then!

  • Frank:

I was on the other side of the table today for my first time. I did REALLY well and can guarantee I will be a dealer at all of the local shows. There was a small turnout for this show but at least I did good. Kinda interesting to see people that know less than me and how they react when I tell them the little bit I know about toning (compared to GSAGUY, tonekiller and others). I can see where some dealers can spot a fresh face and take advantage of them. I did not do this at all. I had a good time giving out free wheats and v nickels to the kids.

Now I just have to be able to buy enough stuff to keep up.............ahhhhhhh the real fun begins
  • image Hey Frank, I hate that I missed it. Im not that far away(Tupelo MS). Let me know when you guys have another.

    JB:

I had a blast talking to the kids at the show as well - I had a Bucket-O-Slabs - where I stuck all my "mistake submissions" and the kids enjoyed going through them and asking questions. Very rewarding experience!

  • Congrats, Frank.

I'll be heading up to Long Beach in a couple of weeks.

  • Congratulations, Frank! What a great experience it must have been for you. You do realize now you have joined the ranks of "Dealers" and as such I can no longer ever talk to you again. But hey... you were a good guy once upon a time, and every now and then I'll raise a mug to you!image
Of course just Kidding Mr. Frank. It's gotten so polarized around here the last couple of weeks you almost feel like you have to choose sides sometimes.
Hopefully, I will walk into a show one day and you will be there, either as a dealer or collector. I would like that very much.

  • I got to see Frank's signature coin today, as well as a couple of other BEAUTIES he had stashed away BEHIND the case! And Frank was as swell a guy as I imagined (though not as pretty as his picture <----over there).

I scored a nice BLUE Jefferson PR67 (the one he howed us a few weeks ago) from Frank and a few other Jeffs and a nice 1958/7 Lincoln from some other dealers. A good show, which already has me thinking about excuses to get the Mrs to let me go back tomorrow image

  • I'm glad you're happy with the blue jeff David!!! It should be another nice day tomorrow as well now that I've had a chance to scope out other possibilities for scoring additions to my collection. Although I was there mainly to SELL coins, I must admit that I also did barter for a couple of nifty new coins. I said goodbye to the really cool 1880CC low 7 dollar that I got from GSAGUY, as well as an 1884CC in MS63 that I had. Plus a couple of other common date MS65 dollars, I was able to score two really great coins (IMHO). The first is an 1880CC Vam4 80/79, reverse of 78 in probably MS63/64. The coin (first one on the picture below) is blast white and the contact marks are acceptable for the grade and not as noticeable as on the picture. The reverse of 78 is a little rarer than the reverse of 79 which I thought was rather cool. The next coin is also an identifiable VAM2 1881CC in probably MS63. The coin has a doubled 88 date and again is blast white. All in all I was quite pleased with my acquisitions and plan to have them graded sometime soon.

PS - Clankmobile - you're da bomb - we'll have to do some suds when we get together at some show in the future! image
