Just picked her up recently and had to show her off. J-1699, Shield Earring quarter. Guess the grade, if you'd like.

Nice coin. What metal is it made of?

Thanks. It's copper. It's also unfair to ask you to guess a grade without seeing it in person, but I'll reveal the grade within an hour.
  • whatever the grade, I like it!

Nice pattern, and the Shield Earring is an attractive design. I'm going with 65.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Interesting coin. I'd love to get into patterns but they are so expensive. I borrowed Judd's pattern book from my coin club's library just to look at them. There are some amazing patterns I never knew exhisted. Here, the grade is not so important. Some patterns are so rare, there may be just a few or just 1 made.

That has lovely color for a 64 RB.

Patterns are a lot of fun and collectors should consider buying just one to help dress their coin set as these patterns are neat.

Also buying just one pattern for each denomination can help limit how deep you get into patterns as they can be a bottomless cup of addicting items to buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You can easily go broke buying patterns!!!!!!!!!!!! I know!!!

Since I enjoy collecting dimes most of all (as a denomination) added about a half of dozen patterns dimes to make the dime type set more interesting. I have always pursued R-7 and at least PR-65, if at all possible. The neatest dime pattern of all in my opinion is the dime pattern with the design of the Morgan silver dollar. But alas, I am on the outside looking in on that one.

We have in our midst some PCGS posters that are reknown for their pattern expertise.

Oreville, I agree wholeheartedly with your post. I love patterns, but am now addicted. R7s and R8s are ideal, PR 65 or better. I'm nearly broke now. Morgan dimes are awesome. Here's my 1586 PCGS 63Cam. Rick
  • I love patterns, but haven't found any in my price range that I've managed to snag yet. It's nice to see all the different patterns in the PCGS pop report, but where would I find a good quality database with images? Maybe a book. . .

If you like patterns, go to ebay and type in "pattern", listed by highest price. Some really nice ones were just listed by Superior.

That's a beauty RKKay. I love copper patterns. I only learned of the ear ring pattern/s? a few months ago. Good find. mdwoods

Patterns were once (and I guess still is) the domain for advanced collectors but hopefully that is changing a little bit.

A very lovely coin regardless of grade.

A wonderful and esoteric choice in collecting.

A very intersting area of collecting with these being both unusual and beautiful.
It is a shame that so many pretty designs never made it all the way to coinage.
A thing of beauty is a joy for ever

Rick: A very telling post. Yes - no question, you are addicted. Yes - I suspect you are nearly broke. BUT, there is still some equity in your house and there are some wonderful coins coming up in the Long Beach sale. And, you will have a table at Long Beach (651) I will be joining you at and I will have plenty of money available to assist you in liquidating some of this stuff. So - HANG IN THERE - you will be OK in the end.
