  • Pretty, but I wonder if they would get by the PCGS graders...

I've often wondered if leaving coins in stratigic places as you did would be considered artificial toning, since, I assume, you used no chemicals or heat and are pretty much letting what's in the air do it's thing. What type of conditions are you storing these in? They look great....specially that Silver Eagle.

Let one side start, and then lay the coin down so only the obverse is toned. You'll be surprised how good a diagnostic tool your experiment can become. Oh, and you might also enjoy a solution of dilute ammonia in a cup underneath a dansco page with the lower slide pulled out for a few days. Amazing. Accelerated toning is one of the reasons I believe AT will never be correctly diagnosed. I wonder how many dipped, cleaned, or stripped coins have been retoned by the more experienced. image Once you've seen the process, you're a better collector.

  • It should be obvious from the sales of wayte raymond holders on ebay, and a quick check of who is buying them, that this type of accelerated toning is gaining ground rapidly. I see you used staple holders, but it works the same, probably quicker because the air containing the contaminants is held captive inside the cellophane. And yes, PCGS and NGC will slab those coins. They look fine. This is why I have stated in other threads that the only way we are going to get over this toning thing is with time. When the market gets so saturated with these toned coins that everyone gets sick of them, then it will be over. But not til then. I love certain types of toned coins. I own some now and I am buying certain ones when I can buy them at the right price and I like the way they look. But as for me personally, I am not going to pay 1500 dollars for a 50.00 Morgan, nor will I pay 250.00 for a 5 dollar nickel or penney. Those who do better like the way it looks because in a few years no one will pay those prices for them. Just my opinion! image

Eagle how did you know about wayte raymond? I have four wayte albums full of coins (nothin' happenin' yet)
  • I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN FINDING OUT HOW YOU DID THIS.

    edited to add: not really
  • Are you sure you're not just pulling our legs.....all the coins are in two by twos and 6-8 months and you got toning on the Eagle like that?

Do you have images of the coins before they were toned?

  • Doesn't surprise me that much about the SAE. Being more silver, they are more reactive.

Well obviously the SAE hasn't been around long enough to gain that toning through time.

I think that the large premiums that toning brings today may not hold up in the future as more and more toned coins hit the market.

And I'm sorry but when there can be a debate over whether it is AT or not and there is no definitive way to determine same, the point IMO becomes moot.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Pay what you will but if your concern is about future value I would be very wary.

    Joe.
  • A lot of PCGS toned SAEs look just like that one. I've always been skeptical of them being real.

coins were sitting in the room without AC whole summer, getting "benefits" of Philadelphia's heat and humidity in the summer and getting all the heat from the radiator (the coins are sitting on the top of the radiator all the time) in the winter. As far as before/after pics - well both eagle and franklin were blast white when I put them in mint bags.

hey sadysta, at this rate, you're going to zoom way past me!

terrific job. fyi, after i'm done frying coins, etc. i dip the he11 out of em & dump 'em at silver-towne. an awful lot of these a-t'd coins would easily get in slabs otherwise.
