help me with this indian head coin

Is there anything wrong with this coin? I want to buy it but I have a funny feeling that there is something wrong with it. Am I just being paranoid or is there? Thanks for your help.

Its hard to tell what the black stuff is but you can read LIBERTY pretty well.
An `08 S is real collectable in any grade. If its a reasonable price it might be a good catch.
Or if the seller has many problem coins for sale you might be careful with this one.

I think that there is a corrosion spot in the word, “states” on the obverse. Overall it looks like the coin has had some dirt and crud removed from it perhaps with an abrasive. The sharpness grade is EF, but with problems, I’d net grade it to VF-20.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • I personall don't like any copper coin that looks like that. It appears it may have been cleaned. The fields are much lighter (it appears) than the devices and protected areas. Again as someone said...if the price is right.....and you are just trying to fill a hole....it might be ok....but I personally wouldn't buy that coin for my collection....but I only buy Mint State PCGS coins.

My Lincoln set is almost done, just the tuffy's left. So i've started looking at Liberty/Indian cents. Don't know a bloody thing about them but it does look like an attempt at cleaning thats only dropped it a grade. If thats ok for you and the price is right, why not.

Problem coin, you'll lose money on it. It looks cleaned (look at how light the fields look in comparison the the devices) and there is a spot of corrosion under the second "T" of "STATES". This is really not a tough date to find in the grades you are looking for, don't settle for a problem coin.
