    Guess that beats my VG10.

I saw it. Personally I would rather own an original VF or XF example. With a pedigree and all I wonder why a simple submission to PCGS wasn't in order? For the ease of counterfeiting a 1901 barber quarter, I wouldn't buy a raw coin, unless it came from David Lawrence's personal collection.

    Tyler,
I saw your comments on the 01-s. I gave it a good starting bid at 15,000.00. I agree, I personaly dont think the coin will holder at PCGS, the way it is or it would already be holdered. I really dont expect to win it at that bid, but I would have taken it at 15,000.00 and carried it around in my pocket for a couple of months and circulated it down to an AU-55, which would still be worth darn near that if you could get it slabbed.

As far as a counterfiet, Before I would purchase a coin like that, I would pick it up personaly and inspect it, 01-s are actually easy to distinguish?

Of course this is hypothectical, cause this coin is not going to sell in this price range?

And I agree, I would actually love to own a PCGS high circulated graded 01-s than a mintstate any day. There much more difficult to find, you rarely ever see one come up for sale. Thats kind of why I mentioned about circulating one down a few points??

Jdimmick - I saw your bid, and figured you were having fun as the reserve was probably far above that. There are two known Dies used to strike the 01-S. The mintmark position between the denticles on the reverse and the date position between the denticles on the obverse are well known. There are large photos in "the complete guide to Barber quarters". that give a nice reference.

Even looking at it myself, for the price and many, many counterfeits floating about, I still would only buy it slabbed by a good service.

  • I wonder why the coin isn't slabbed. I'm sure that PCGS would pedigree the coin. I would be more comfortable bidding on a '01-S in MS64 if it was slabbed. It would be really cool to own the king of 20th Century business strike coins in high grade some day. I better start saving now.image

    A stunning quarter. Holy cow!

The "no slab" thing does make me worry a little. On the other hand, somebody plunking down $30K+ on a coin of this magnatude will probably be able to (and will want to) authenticate it him/herself. We're talking a serious collector.

But I myself would like to get PCGS's opinion as well. If the "s" fall off in my lap, I'd want someone to blame...

Always looking for original, better date VF20-VF35 Barber quarters and halves, and a quality beer.

    My coin grades a G-4+.
  • Unless i win the lotteru i will never buy an 01 S quarter. So my nice m.s. 64 02 S will have to do "sigh" oh well.
