1878 7tf Variety HELP PLEASE

I have a BU 1878 7tf that has Deep mirrors, heavy frosting and doubling in "LIBERTY" as well as a weak nostril and a deformed wheat stalk (the longest one).

Can someone please tell me if they are familiar with this variety (and no I am not in the market to sell this coin - LOL).

Thank you for any help you can give me. image

  • coingirl - Unfortunately, I cannot give you assistance on the coin (my area of some expertise is Lincolns) but welcome to the boards. I'm sure one of the very knowledgable members here can give his/her opinion on your question.

  • Welcome to the boards, i can't help you but your photography skills are excellent.
  • Thank you for the welcome Mike. I have been trying to get the time in my schedule to get active on this board. I am in the middle of building a high grade collection. I am concentrating on my Morgans and Walking Liberty's first, then on to other areas. I have been investing in coins rather than the volatile stock market for the past year and am real pleased with the results.

I have found so many people who are so friendly and willing to share advice and their expertise despite the fact that I live in a small town and have virtually no reputable coin dealers here. I actually walked into a shop and caught a dealer "cleaning" a coin with silver cleaner and cotton swabs, then he placed it in his case with it labeled BU - You could practically see the damage from the cleaning with the naked eye.

BTW - I am Jenn in real life.

    Coingirl,

my older VAM book lists 230 different varieties of 1878 philly morgan. Many of them with doubled Liberty. It would take a fair amount of time to search through and find that exact one (at least for me).

I'm sure there are others on this board with familarity of VAMs that can be of assistance.

    It sounds like a nice coin.....It looks like a nice coin....It's not a 7 TF but rather a 7/8.
Sounds like a VAM 21 but I wouldn't swear to it because it's tough to attribute without seeing the coin firsthand.
It should have doubling in the loops of the 8s, the eagles beak and ONE DOLLAR & the top arrowhead also.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • I`m not a VAM expert but, do you guys think it might be a VAM 199-2 as discribed in the link below?

  • Master Collector....

I just got through looking at the coin again and there is no apparent doubling in any of the areas you mentioned. Also, there is no evidence of it being a 7/8. I will get some micro photos of those areas and include them in a post in a few minutes.

Thank you for your reply, and thank everyone for being so nice to a new member of the boards.

Yeah it does look more like the B rev and as ccr pointed out there have been many additions to the VAM list. Could be the old Vam 116 which they now call the 199-2.

  • OOPS! I left a blank message image

Here are some additional photos taken at 60X to help further identify the variety of this Morgan.

I really want to thank you all for such a great welcome and for all the assistance.
