Exceptionally nice Jefferson Nickel. Guess the grade?? Grade Revealed.

This is the kind of coin that anyone would die to have. Very PQ coin but before I get ahead of myself I want you to tell me what you think this lovely coin is graded. I will get back with you tomorrow evening and reveal the grade. Picture may take a little time for those with dialup.

What makes me think its a Proof is the sharp strike.Lots of detail on the reverse.Obverse fields look ultra clean.
It must be a Proof.
Watch me be wrong.

I'd agree with Carl. He has a good eye, and lots of Jeff skill. I'm already on record, so I won't edit my post, but the strike is excellent.

It's either a type 1 1939 proof (my guess 66 or 67) or it has the best full set of steps I've ever seen for a 1939 rev. of 38 business strike and that's just not going to happen.

Looks to be at least MS66, and if it is my 38-D wildly toned rainbow in a PCGS65 holder is MS67.

I just wanted to thank everyone who has tried at guessing the grade. It will still be a little while before I post the grade so just keep on guessing.

From the responses that I have heard all of you are really going to be suprised about the grade. The grade for the nickel that you guessed the grade on is only a NGC Proof 65. The coin looks just as stunning as the picture shows. I want your thoughts about if you think it would get a better grade if sent in to PCGS for grading or do you think I should try to cross it to PCGS without an upgrade in the near future?

My first thought is - are their hairlines on the coin?

Kranky I just took out my 10x loupe and searched the obverse and reverse for hairlines and from what I could tell the coin does not have any hairlines.

That's your first mistake (used to also be mine, and I missed a lot of hairlines). They're actually easier to spot with the naked eye, but the coin must be held at the correct angle under a high wattage light source. Sometimes you have to keep moving it around until you find the precise angle and, unfortunately, locating hairlines when the coin is in the slab makes it even more difficult.

Russ, I did what you told me to but I still did not see any hairlines. Would NGC have given the coin a lower grade because it has a very light haze over the fields on the obverse and reverse? I want to know this because when I rotated the coin so that the toning would not show up I noticed a light haze. The haze is not really that bad but I just wanted to include this information to help you decide.

I don't have any experience with NGC, but with PCGS a "very light" haze would drop it a point at most. Of course, everybody has a different definition of "very light". Most eBay sellers think "very light" means covered in crap.

Edited to note that a hairline ot two will impact the grade much more than a light haze, or even a visible spot. The grading services (PCGS, at least) seem to hate hairlines far more than minor surface contaminants.

Haziness can certainly hold down the grade on a proof, as the mirrors are
one aspect of the coin's grade. It is very difficult to find superb color (like this
coin has) without the haze, as they usually go hand in hand.

I am surprised it was not graded higher! My comment about it going into a
PCGS 66 holder was based on the marks at the top of Monticello.

It is extremely difficult to grade from pictures, and there is probably something
the graders saw that doesn't show in the photo, such as hairlines.

Regardless of the current grade, I still like the coin!
