I think we can say this with some accuracy: if a coin is in an environment conducive to toning, indeed, is the cause of the current state of oxidation, then beyond some point attractive patination is likely to become dark, adversely affecting luster and resulting in loss of eye appeal. Removal of, say, a pretty toned coin into a toning free situation will result in no further oxidation, at least to the naked eye. So, pretty can become ugly very easily.
In contrast, it's hard to imagine the opposite -- an ugly toned coin becoming attractive if left to continue to tone. If the coin has reached a state of ugly, it's not going to get pretty if left in the same environment, nor is it likely to improve much in any environment. Ugly toning is forever -- unless jeweluster is applied, and even then the surfaces may already be damaged, especially if the coin is a proof.
So you see, for instance, rainbow toning develope from its earliest stages always seeing the rainbow there. And, if its that sometimes unatractive brown tone its always going to be ugly brown or black? What I was getting at was the coin wont turn blue or green someday will it? I take it thats probably not going to happen.
Bucking conventional wisdom: if the toning is a result of contaminates on the surface (attracted magnetically, as opposed to sulphur laden gases), the coin will continue to tone until butt ugly, even if removed from the original environment. only way to stop it is to neutralize with acetone.
