When PCGS asks for your grade....

When submitting to PCGS the form asks you for a grade that you would expect to be the minimum acceptable grade(at least that's the way I read it). Do they charge for grading if the coin grades out lower than you wanted? So I guess your grading better be pretty accurate or your s.o.l...and outta some bucks. I guess I need to call them before sending my first batch in. Can you just put in MS, leaving the number up to them? HMMMMM...

it's much better by far,

I think that is for crossovers. They'll send it back in the original holder if the coin doesn't make your grade. That way you still have the coin in the original holder (ana, ngc, etc.). When sending raw coins if you put a minimum they will simply return a coin that does not make the grade. Leave it blank and they will put the coin into PCGS holder if it is not body bagged.

There are three situations where that matters; crossover, regrade and bulk. If just submitting raw coins in less than bulk numbers, than that line would not be used. If it is used, and the coin did not meet the grade it would not be slabbed and, yes, you are still charged for the fees.

  • You don't have to fill out that section, unless there's a minimum grade that you wanted it graded at. Say you put down MS65, and PCGS decides that the coin is MS64, then I think they won't slab it, and just send the coin back, unslabbed and ungraded.

I have filled in the minimum grade for both raw coins and regrades. They have always slabbed the coin in a lower grade than the minimum grade stated.

I have never tried to cross a coin, so I don't know if the look at it then.
