Its officially ~1/2 dime~ weekend. Bust and Seated specialists welcome!. My 1872 ANACS-61 toned po

I have caught the seated ~1/2~ dime bug. Here is the latest acquisition.

1872 ~1/2 10c~ ANACS-MS61 toned.

I find these little jewels addictive.
Since I am near completing my Roosies and have long completed my Mercs. I have decided to undertake these. I like the fact that they are still affordable in AU+ and are riddled with varieties.

The 1858 date you see below is a 1858/1858 overdate seated half dime.

I purchased Al Blythe's book on seated 1/2 dimes. I find it very useful. Thats a nice 1858 RPD.
I like the loop inside the -5-.

    Brian,

The date is cool. You can see parts of the date underneath each number. There is an inverted date, too. I have been trying to pick one of those up for sometime now.

    Ken:
that was great, thanks for the laugh.

    FC:
Yeah, the inverted date is tough. I know I will have fun with the varieties in Blythe's book.

Thats a super coin. Who can resist blue toning. I agree that these are very undervalued and I am
very happy with the piece I bought today.

  • If I were to collect a single series it might well be Seated Half Dimes. They've been my favorite part of my typeset so far--an interesting, attractive, obsolete coin that is available and affordable.image Mine aren't spectacular, but to my eye they are nice lightly circulated coins.

  • Please, please, please stop this thread - I have enough collecting addictions and the last thing I need is to fall in love with another series!

Very beautiful coins - thanks for the pics!

Half dimes are cool. The only coin I would say to avoid is the 1861/0. The more you read and talk to different "specialists", the easier it is to be convinced that it isn't really an overdate. I'm always on the hunt for attractive half dimes image
Toyonakataro has some beauties! You just have to convince him to post some pics image
Michael, you have to please promise us that you will only post that pic less than once a month. My jaw can't drop this often without me picking up an injury image

    BigD5-
Talking about 1861/0, do you think it's REALLY R-6 in mint state as the book says?
I see this variety in mintstate sooo often image
  • BigD5BigD5 Posts: 3,433
Not even close to R6. I heard a small hoard of them was found, and they were slowly being introduced into the market, as not to flood it, lowering the prices. I haven't been able to confirm that though. As you said, there seems to be an awfully plentiful supply in mint state floating around.

  • The 1858 OVERDATE half dime is rare in circulated grade and way RARE in UNC. In the time that I've been collecting half dimes, I have only seen ONE example that was a true UNC. The 1858 overdate is much scarcer than the 1858 "inverted" date" half dime - which itself is scarce (especially in Unc).

There are some very nice looking images of Seated Half Dimes already posted. Thank you all for sharing them. Hey Wayne, I like your "small date" 1837 half dime. toyonakataro I love your 1837 large date too! GREAT color. image

Here is my favorite half pint ..er.. dime. It is the half dime without a country, the 1860 transitional piece. No legend. Currently for sale at Pinnacle.

    Coinguy1 - care to comment?

1860 Transitional NGC MS66 Seated Liberty
Technically a Pattern (Judd-267), though pursued by both Pattern and Half Dime collectors. This intriguing design displays the regular obverse die of 1859, with stars circling Ms. Liberty, but is dated 1860 and displays the regular reverse die of 1860. The unusual die marriage created a coin that makes no mention of the issuing sovereign, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Purportedly, only 100 were struck and this is easily among the most desirable ones we have encountered. It is much better struck than many and is virtually free of the die striations that are so often seen on these pieces. The surfaces are blemish-free and are enhanced by lovely original patina - each side features very delicate golden centers, with the obverse tantalizing the viewer with scrumptious turquoise green and traces of violet at the border. A most impressive little rarity. NGC has certified a lone example higher. ...$8,500.00

Superb coins everyone. Speaking of Rarity scales. How accurate is the Blythe book when it comes to these? I think he wrote the book over 15 years ago.
