What do you live to do?

Let's supplement the very interesting threads on "handles" and jobs with something on our non-coin related hobbies?

For starters, I'm a ham radio operator and long distance bicycler. Did about 400 miles in six days a couple of months before turning 70.image

MTB (mountain biking). Avid hockey fan.
  • Me I love to go fishing and I also collect mineral fossils.

But what i really like to do is travel, it dosent have to be to the other side of the planet. But just to different places in Indiana or Ohio. Anything that looks different.

Just an interesting fact the total value of my 4 bikes is over 8 grandimage
    Moutain bike - $3,000
    Road bike -$2,300
    Assult bike -$1,300
    spare moutain bike -$1,800

  • I love playing golf. My most satisfying accomplishments come from woodworking. Three years ago, I hand crafted a wooden box to house the state quarter proof sets. I drilled fifty holes in the cover with a one inch forstner bit to represent each quarter. The dimensions of the box will house each year's proof and silver proof set. The box has hand chiseled box joints on all corners. After I completed my work of art, I heard rumors of extending the series.image

Hunting and fishing! Nowadays (ie: with a 1-year old and a 3-year old) I hardly ever have time to get outside. Last summer, I took my boat out only 3 times!image

Go for a walk in the woods..........maybe a hundred miles or so at a time.

    I live for Hiking/Backpacking.

I have hiked many of the trails of the Southeast and I've hiked over 900 miles of the AT (oops around here that's a nasty- I'm referring to the Appalachian Trail). My handle here is from my backpacking experiences. The AT has a series of registers along the way so you can be tracked down in case of emergencies. Of course nowadays with cell phones you are not nearly as isolated as in the past.

In keeping with tradition, these registers are always sign using a handle or trail name. I am 6'-2" tall and 230 lbs. I am unusually large for a Backpacker. I've been called the "FatMan" on the trail for years.

Every time I see AT written in the threads it makes me ache for a hike in the woods. There is nothing more peaceful than packing everything you need on your back and hitting the trail for a couple of weeks. <B>

I know but i figure this way i'll stay in shape while i'm having fun.
  • Family, Softball, Golf & Chess. Pretty much in that order! image
  • Fatman,
I've always wanted to do the AT thing. I'm going to try to talk my wife into it as soon as we can get the the kids out of the house. Sounds like the ultimate intimate experience.
  • dabugler,

Seems like we have a few things in common. I love golf. I've always wanted to hike the AT. And I have a love for woodcarving, although I really don't have the time for it. My first, and only real, woodcarving project is a "Ball in a Box" that I've been slooowly working on for the last 10 years. It does look pretty neat though! I'll try to post a pic some day. image
  • I am intrigued by the "ball in the box". Personally, Ive only at experimental stage of hand carving. I've become a wizard with the circular saw. Homemade jigs and all ten fingers. I'm the king of the "workmate". Nothing beats a sharp set of chissels.image
  • My hobby is actually a part time job; sometimes more full time than part time.

I take photos for skiing and mountaineering magazines and catalogues, such as: SKI, SKIING, Powder, Couloir, Patagonia, Winterstick, etc. I am flying out to Cordova, AK for three weeks in March to shoot some of the best skiers in the world heli-skiing. Next December we are planning to ski the Polish Glacier on Acuncogua. If all goes well the following April or May we are planning to climb and ski Manaslu, Nepal.

This is a picture of me climbing and skiing Salt Lake Twin. Don't fall on this one; it would prove to be fatal.

I was a National Ski Patroller (volunteer) for a few years, oldcameoproofsguy is making me jealous! I live on the East Coast now, so had to settle for Killington this year image Haven't flown since the government decided it could search people without any probable cause (didn't bother me when they were private airport employees) image It's a matter of principal.

It may sound strange but I have to take a line from this hobby. Be sure to "Buy the Book before the Hike". Each year only about 200 of the Thru-Hikers who begin the hike at Springer Mountain GA with the intention of making the 2147 mile trip to Mt Katahdin ME actually finish. Most are hard core backpackers who have hundreds/thousand miles of experience. As I am getting up in years (45) I don't think I would try to do the AT now as a single hike. I plan on completing the other 1200 miles I have left over a three year period. Anyway, if you are really interested I would suggest the following as a starter.

"Walking the Appalchian Trail by Larry Luxenberg"--Can Be Purchased Here

This is not a how to book. It is a compilation of short stories of Thru-Hiker experiences. It does an outstanding job of giving you the feeling of the Trail -- Both the fabulous Highs and the most dreaded Lows. Its a good short read and well worth it if you are really considering the challenge. Feel free to PM me anytime on this topic.

  • Crito,

Killington has snow so hard you can shoot at it with a .45 from point blank and not even dent it.

Utah has the best powder snow on earth. Although, I may change my mind after AK. Most of the time I wish I had a snorkel because it's hard to breath from all the face shots. If you've skied here, you know what I'm talking about.image

I haven't done Utah yet, but can tell you the drive from Knoxville, TN to Denver, CO is exactly 23 hours image which I've driven straight a couple times... call me a snow junkie image Brekenridge usually.
  • Fatman, Thanks for the concern. I grew up on the east coast. I wouldn't attempt the whole trek at this point. Have spent many a weekend camping along many points of the AT. My wife and I love camping and hiking. You can't beat the feeling of satisfaction you get when accomplishing a shared goal with a loved one.
  • Colorado rocks,

I grew up skiing Loveland and A-Basin. There's nothing wrong with a big snow day in Colorado.

  • mbbiker:

I used to race mountain bikes from 93-96 and have been in roughly 60-70 races. The most memorable races I have participated in was 3, 24 hour races. These were held here is Texas and my team came in second the first 2 years. There is nothing like being awake for 36 hours and riding about 100 miles off road.

total invested in my mountainbike that is hanging in the garage is roughly.....

    $6000

in my younger days I did a little boxing but wasn't very good at it. Whan they started to call me canvice back Mac I quit that. That I tryed auto race on a 8th mile short track. There is a hobby that cost so coin. When I could no longer afford that. Golf was the thing but with Maines long cold winters I feel drinking beer and watching TV is going to be about the only thing I'll be doing until May. o yes I was also a recue/firefighter for 6 year volunteer

  • Great minds think alike image I'm an avid golfer, although I just started playing 2 years ago. I'm also an avid woodworker. Current projects are a large cherry box for displaying slabs at shows, and small slab boxes that have interchangeable inserts to hold each and every type of slab, tired of seeing all those different boxes in my safe...

Besides, it's good practice with all those dovetails. image

  • Family, wood carving, road bicycling, computers.

For the carvers, I have done a gnome, a rose and a family of dolphins. I am working on a chain (out of mahogony), a black rose (African Blackwood) and a Cinderella (Paduk). Since I don't smoke in the house (I have an 8 month old daughter that doesn't need that), when ever I go out to the garage to smoke, I pick up the chisels or the knife and do some more on one of the projects. Oh, I did the same thing on the ball-in-the-box - got 2/3 of the way into it and split one of the sides out. Chucked it across the garage in disgust and have tried again yet....

I'm another big tree person, I own a small patch of old-growth in the North Cascades - it will never be logged as long as I am alive. I live on four acres of forest in Woodinville, WA. Also, working on my three DeSoto's.

An interesting hobby that I wished I had more time for is silversmithing. I took classes in holloware, and have "raised" several bowls and vases. This is very labor intensive but the results are very satisfying, this is how silver holloware was made 200 years ago.

aaaahhhh, besides coins? well like many here I like to mountain bike (live on the edge of a great canyon full of trails) and ski (was in Utah this past weekend, 3 consecutive days at Alta/Snowbird) and also scuba dive (have been to Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, Fiji, Carribean, etc.) you could say I'm a travel junkie, but you know what's funny? as soon as I get home, it's straight to the coins for a look!

Like to ride my horse (Arabian gelding) on single track trails that are off limits to you mountain bike guys. Don't know what the situation is where you guys bike, but there has been something of a range war in Marin County among bikers, horsemen, and hikers over trail access. Bikers can use the fire roads. There are miles and miles of fire roads, including the Repack where the mountain bike was born. There are just too many users to permit bikers to use the single track trails. The contravetsy seems to have quieted down lately as the various groups seem to have found a way to co-exist peacefully.
