What do you live to do?

Let's supplement the very interesting threads on "handles" and jobs with something on our non-coin related hobbies?
For starters, I'm a ham radio operator and long distance bicycler. Did about 400 miles in six days a couple of months before turning 70.

My first YOU SUCK on May 6 2005
Just an interesting fact the total value of my 4 bikes is over 8 grand
Moutain bike - $3,000
Road bike -$2,300
Assult bike -$1,300
spare moutain bike -$1,800
It looks like cycling is a popular sport.
I really like airplanes- anything dealing with them... I want to design them when I grow up
mmbiker.........WOW Think of all the coins you could have bought with $8000!!
I live for Hiking/Backpacking.
I have hiked many of the trails of the Southeast and I've hiked over 900 miles of the AT (oops around here that's a nasty- I'm referring to the Appalachian Trail). My handle here is from my backpacking experiences. The AT has a series of registers along the way so you can be tracked down in case of emergencies. Of course nowadays with cell phones you are not nearly as isolated as in the past.
In keeping with tradition, these registers are always sign using a handle or trail name. I am 6'-2" tall and 230 lbs. I am unusually large for a Backpacker. I've been called the "FatMan" on the trail for years.
Every time I see AT written in the threads it makes me ache for a hike in the woods. There is nothing more peaceful than packing everything you need on your back and hitting the trail for a couple of weeks. <B>

I know but i figure this way i'll stay in shape while i'm having fun.
I've always wanted to do the AT thing. I'm going to try to talk my wife into it as soon as we can get the the kids out of the house. Sounds like the ultimate intimate experience.
Seems like we have a few things in common. I love golf. I've always wanted to hike the AT. And I have a love for woodcarving, although I really don't have the time for it. My first, and only real, woodcarving project is a "Ball in a Box" that I've been slooowly working on for the last 10 years. It does look pretty neat though! I'll try to post a pic some day.
I take photos for skiing and mountaineering magazines and catalogues, such as: SKI, SKIING, Powder, Couloir, Patagonia, Winterstick, etc. I am flying out to Cordova, AK for three weeks in March to shoot some of the best skiers in the world heli-skiing. Next December we are planning to ski the Polish Glacier on Acuncogua. If all goes well the following April or May we are planning to climb and ski Manaslu, Nepal.
This is a picture of me climbing and skiing Salt Lake Twin. Don't fall on this one; it would prove to be fatal.
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.
It may sound strange but I have to take a line from this hobby. Be sure to "Buy the Book before the Hike". Each year only about 200 of the Thru-Hikers who begin the hike at Springer Mountain GA with the intention of making the 2147 mile trip to Mt Katahdin ME actually finish. Most are hard core backpackers who have hundreds/thousand miles of experience. As I am getting up in years (45) I don't think I would try to do the AT now as a single hike. I plan on completing the other 1200 miles I have left over a three year period. Anyway, if you are really interested I would suggest the following as a starter.
"Walking the Appalchian Trail by Larry Luxenberg"--Can Be Purchased Here
This is not a how to book. It is a compilation of short stories of Thru-Hiker experiences. It does an outstanding job of giving you the feeling of the Trail -- Both the fabulous Highs and the most dreaded Lows. Its a good short read and well worth it if you are really considering the challenge. Feel free to PM me anytime on this topic.

Killington has snow so hard you can shoot at it with a .45 from point blank and not even dent it.
Utah has the best powder snow on earth. Although, I may change my mind after AK. Most of the time I wish I had a snorkel because it's hard to breath from all the face shots. If you've skied here, you know what I'm talking about.
I grew up skiing Loveland and A-Basin. There's nothing wrong with a big snow day in Colorado.

I used to race mountain bikes from 93-96 and have been in roughly 60-70 races. The most memorable races I have participated in was 3, 24 hour races. These were held here is Texas and my team came in second the first 2 years. There is nothing like being awake for 36 hours and riding about 100 miles off road.
total invested in my mountainbike that is hanging in the garage is roughly.....
$6000
I hate it when you see my post before I can edit the spelling.

For the carvers, I have done a gnome, a rose and a family of dolphins. I am working on a chain (out of mahogony), a black rose (African Blackwood) and a Cinderella (Paduk). Since I don't smoke in the house (I have an 8 month old daughter that doesn't need that), when ever I go out to the garage to smoke, I pick up the chisels or the knife and do some more on one of the projects. Oh, I did the same thing on the ball-in-the-box - got 2/3 of the way into it and split one of the sides out. Chucked it across the garage in disgust and have tried again yet....

Suggestion: if you can get there, do the Napali Coast zodiac raft trip. If you love snorkeling, it will be the BEST experince of your life! I also recommend the Caymans.

JUST SAY NO TO WANNABES! They lurk and prey on unwitting collectors in chatrooms!
I'd like to go with you! With a snorkel in your mouth, you would have a hard time yelling at me so much ! :-)

An interesting hobby that I wished I had more time for is silversmithing. I took classes in holloware, and have "raised" several bowls and vases. This is very labor intensive but the results are very satisfying, this is how silver holloware was made 200 years ago.
