The 1904-S is by far the scar....wait....you don't want to know about...about...Barber halves....Sniffle, sniffle. Uh, my mom is calling and I have to go now.

Tis but a starting point, f-man . . . . it can be added to. I thought it would be good of the collective group to use their expertise to tell us of the one coin in a series that would float their boat. I don't know these older series as well, so I started there. I'm here to learn.

Tyler, I wasn't excluding the Roman Gods, they can be added to the list. Tell me your thoughts. A

Already, I would like to know why the 2C 1864SM was picked over the 1872. I am clueless in the 2C area.
    Doug
  • Those are just my opinons, I picked the 64SM because i find it more fun cherrypicking one of those than to pay full price for the 72. Which one is rarer the 72 which one is more fun to look for the 64SM.

All opinions count! That's what this board is for. Maybe we will have some meaningful conversation about the "key" coin of a series. Lincoln MS collectors ramble around with the 09-SVDB, 14-D, 22 No. P, and the 55 DDO. What about other series?

Well Ok then...image I am not really an Unc. collector but I do play one on T.V.

Top three for scarcity and pop numbers (excluding varieties..IE, 1892-Micro o)

1904-S is the king of barber halves.
    1896-O
1901-S was the king for many years till the grading services dethroned it, still very scarce.

OK so you all knew that.

Great bargains for price VS scarcity
1911-S a late date set stopper.
1903 inexplicably scarce for a high mintage P mint.

I spoke with the number two Barber half man on the PCGS registry set a few days back. The last date to complete his Barber half set was the 1911-S.

  • I am not an expert.

    2002 Ohio - P state quarter.

I know of one local dealer who tells me he can't find them.

    No, I didn't know that. I'm not a barber man . . . . yet!

Thanks for the info. So you are saying the 04S is the king and the others are basically second tier semi-keys.

Since we're including varieties, here's my list for what interests me:

    * Seated Halves: 1853-O No Arrows. Three known, the finest is the Queller specimen in VF.
    * Flowing Hair Dollar: 1795 Bol.18. Only one specimen known, the Eliasberg specimen, in AU and currently residing in a NJ specialist's collection.
    * Draped Bust, Small Eagle Dollar: 1796 Bol.6. Only 3 known, the finest is the Mr. 1796 specimen (VF35) and currently residing in a NJ specialist's collection. This variety is very cool due to the prominent vertical reverse die crack.
    * Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle Dollar: 1798 Bol.32. 12 or 13 specimens extant, the finest being a fantastic ChAU slider specimen from the Jim Matthews collection.
    * Seated Dollar, No Motto: 1845, about a dozen in true UNC, with the finest being the Norweb specimen (MS64?).
    * Seated Dollar, Motto: 1870-S, 10 known, the finest being the only UNC specimen from the James A. Stack collection.
    * Trade Dollar: 1876-S DDO, with only a small handful known. I'll let TDN or Keoj talk about this more...
