Your thoughts on this NGC statehood quarter with a PL designation.

I just did a BIN on this. This is the first time I have seen a PL designation on a statehood quarter.
I will be interesting to see how it looks when I get it. I though the price was great. Any thoughts?
I wonder how the pops will look down the road in PL?

NGC doesn't toss out the PL designator like candy. Nice score for the money and I bet you'll be impressed with the 'mirrors' on that MintState coin.

It will be very interesting to see the numbers on these over time. Both pops and prices.

I saw some MDs a long time ago with the PL designation... I'd think the coin would be VERY nice image

I have not seen a PCGS example with a PL designation. Should be interesting to see one of theirs
    as well.

I had asked Rick M. to consider the PL designation for MS State Quarters back in 1999-2000, when I was coming across many DMPL Delaware, PA, and NJ coins. Rick basically told me something to the effect that there were simply too many that come PL to consider it.

Actually, I still believe the PL designation is appropriate on any coin and should not be limited to just a few, like Morgan Dollars for example.

I applaud NGC for acknowledging the PL designation on state quarters and it really shows the "pro collector" stance NGC has been employing for many years over there image Wondercoin

What do I think of this? I wish I could tell you as the picture sucks. image

Do any of you Modern collectors ever see this PL designation used on, say, Ike dollars? Alan Hagar (all ACG non-sense aside) wrote the Ike book and stated there are very few PL Ikes. I have seen Ikes (designated by ACG obviously) years ago and they did look very much PL. I haven't seen one for years however....was I just imagining things or do these exsist?

I would say maybe 2-3% of the MS population would qualify for a PL listing.
    This is only a guess.
    Any thoughts?

Jom: PL Mint State Ikes are wonderful "rare birds" and always a pleasure to come across. I personally have a nice raw collection of PL silver Roosies and Wash Quarters, as well as an occasional Jefferson, Franklin and even one Lincoln Wheat Cent.

IMHO, there is absolutely no reason to limit the PL designation to Morgan dollars, besides sheer laziness. These are GREAT collector coins and deserve recognition. I have personally not pushed the issue, because, quite frankly, if they started recognizing them, the temptation to slab them would be great and I enjoy my raw coins just as they are. image Wondercoin.

I agree. As much as I don't go for some of the so-called "rare" moderns, PL's are truly rare coins. It has been a LONG time since I've seen any such "bird". It's like the early proof coins (I mean the 1936-42 set) with Cameo. You just don't see many of these...if at all.

All the regular issue PL Ikes are extremely tough or rare. They also
tend to be marked up a little more than other coins of the same date.
The '76 type 1 is one of the easier ones but accounts for less than 1%
    of mint set coins.
