Premium for a Top 100 Vam 4 Morgan?

northcoinnorthcoin Posts: 4,987 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm not really into collecting VAM varieties of Morgans, but have been offered an 1880/79 O NGC 62 PL with a Top 100 Vam 4 designation. The collectors universe price guide suggests this coin without the Vam designation has a retail value of $300 with an MS63 PL going for $910. My question is whether the "Top 100 Vam 4" designation merits a value four times or more than that of a non Vam? Is this coin in MS62 PL a "bargain" at $1,000 or a rip-off?

I couldnt get much response for my `34 D DDO VAM4 Peace Dollar I posted.
I checked out Ebay for prices.Saw a neat raw `alligator eye` Morgan for what seemed a reasonable price.
I thought some of these would command much higher prices.
In my thread `DDO Peace Dollar` I asked for any price guide for these suckers but no ones come up with anything.Maybe there isnt a price guide for VAMs?

According to the latest Top100 value-guide, published by Mike Fey (author ot the VAM Keys) the 1880/79-O Vam 4 in MS62PL trades as follows. Not sure how recent or dated the info you provided is.

    1880/70-O MS62 $130 non-var $110
    PL $210 $130
    MS63 $400 $230
    PL $700 $350

Please note that the Top100 value-guide trading price for non varieties does not always equal the greysheet trading price. Sometimes it is higher and sometimes it may be lower; expect to pay the higher of the two UNLESS you cherrypick it at the non-variety listing.
