Roosevelt Dime collectors: What would you think of a “full Flame” designation?

In a recent Collectors Survey conducted by PCGS, they proposed five potential new designations:

(1) “Full Flame” for Roosevelt dimes

(2) “Full Hand” for Walking Liberty halves

(3) “Full Corn” for Liberty nickels

(4) “Full Bars” for Three Cent nickels

(5) “Full Claws” for Barbers

I’ve developed a fondness for Roosevelt dimes. NGC MS67's can be bought for $30-$40 (some of them). That’s pretty cheap! Anyway, If PCGS were to start designating Roosevelt dimes with the “Full Flame” designation, would that change anything as far as the way you collect them? Would you submit your already-slabbed coins in hopes of getting the FF designation? It would probably take quite a while to determine which are the key dates in Full Flame. Would you even worry about it?

How important is a full flame to you? Would you pay a premium for it?

Are we getting ridiculous with all of these designations?

Dan

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Boy are they ever leaving themselves open for deragatory designations! I can come up with a few for " Full Flaming Ass$ole", "Full Handj%b", or how about the popular "Full CornH$lio"image

I believe ACG has expired copyrights on some of those.

But, yes, I think the hobby is designation happy! And to me, it seems a bit ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if someone even attempts to define the approximate strike count a coin is. Like "Die III11, C2b, appx 45000th coin struck at 2:30 after a coffee break while the in-room temperature was appx. 75 degrees with a northeasterly directed fan rotating at appx. 100 rpm. The die preparer had too much sugar and engraved his initials in the tiny section of the lower denticle, but was found by the 45500th coin so had to be polished out by 3:00 PM."

Of course, this description is in jest for all my coinfriends who love the details. image

The designations that you propose are perfectly legitimate and would help designate those
coins that have superior strike as is the case with FB, FS, FH, and FBL. These would help increase
demand for superior coins and should be done.

Can someone show me (all of us) pictures of various aspects of the flame so I can see full and partial variations thereof?

    Thanks,
  • I was thinking the same as Lanlord. What exactly is a full flame?

I don't like it at all. Additionally, I don't believe that all coins that are given the existing qualifiers are well struck coins. Simply because a coin has a small element well struck does not mean that it is an overall good strike.

  • It's a GREAT IDEA! Let 's all get a Full Head of steam over this! We should Fully strike up the Bands, and form into Full Bell Lines to get Proof-Like is the flame full? Is the hand 1/4, 2/3 or a rare .9 hand? Don't get Buffaloed into buying a Walker with only an 82% hand, or one where the hand was filled in with putty...

All right, forget about it! This whole thing is just a Sack A Jawewa.

    Sorry for my tone-it's artificial...image

I don't think we need additional designations. And if the collectors really demand these, why can't we simply have one designation for multiple coins. Full Strike (FS)? To me it looks like we are trying to create things that simply have not meant much to collectors over time. How many of us (other than Russ) would be willing to pay a high premium for lets say a Kennedy half with a full ear on the obverse and a full beak on the reverse?

I am not for full flame nor am I for the full band designation, I believe these two aspects of the strike should already be factored
in with the assigned grade. If full bands on a mercury dime represents a superior strike then how can you have an MS69 or even
an MS68 without the full band designation. If the strike is not there then the grade shouldn't be there either. For any coin to
grade above MS67 it should have a full strike or at least 98% full. I say through out all the designations.....

    onlyroosies:

ABSOLUTELY agree with your statement. A 67 or higher should all be there strike wise. Apparently the grading services Do Not agree though.

Full Flame - you've got to be kidding. image

OnlyRoosies, Colorfulcoin, Quattro, myself and a few other ultra serious Roosie Dime fans are right here on the Forum. Someone from CU could have easily contacted us to discuss a Full Band designation and we would have voiced our opinions (there is some mild support for the concept). But, to ask about a Full Flame designation shows me just how out of touch the "powers that be" are at CU today. Hey, maybe a full nostril and strong smile is an idea too image

Hell I want the Full Axe Blade designation for Mercs. Getting tired of these mushy part blade dimes. I need someone to tell me when it is Full.

    "(5) “Full Claws” for Barbers"

Now I get it - the results of this survey must be due to be turned in April 1, 2003. Hey, let's add "full labotomy" for tenured employees image Wondercoin

Didn't PCGS say they are busy? They don't need all these designation reviews! (their wallets won't mind) image

The only designation for anything should be FULL STRIKE. Period.

Actually, I don't even like that. IMO, the MARKET should decide if the coin is worth a premium instead of PCGS (or whoever) designate anything.

image Please, no more special designations or lowered standards for issues with weak strikes. The PCGS grading guide says a weak strike limits the grade of MS coins - that should be enough. If a particular coin is known for a weak strike, such as S-mint WL halves from the 1940s, so be it. There's no law that says MS-68 1944-s halves have to exist, so we shouldn't have to invent one. image

I totally support a "full Flame" designation so long as it pertains to COLOR...since FULL FLAMING COLOR makes roosies special, not a microscopic look at 10 extra foot pounds of striking pressure....want strike?? Buy proofs!!!!!
